Why?

I'd rather go 8 years now then have to go 11-12 after 6 years when he is a Norris trophy finalist.

If you don't think there is much risk and Provorov is just going to get better I would pay him 8 at 8 and not think twice.

I agree, anything under 8 is an absolute steal in my opinion.

I'm starting to think that some folks around here just do not understand how good IP is right now and that he's going to get even better.

You need to be able to look down the road, JVR, G, Jake, all off the books by then. There is no problem paying him 10+ 6 years out while we have a great value contract for the 6 years prior. The big guys come off the books and then Provy is essentially your new top paid guy along with hopefully Patrick depending how he develops.
- ClaudeFather

But why pay 10+ when I don't have to?

Maybe that extra cash allows me to get a forward piece I need.

Provorov has little risk in my opinion. I pay 8 at 8 now and not think about it.

I'm starting to think people on here don't understand contracts in the NHL work. Do i think Provy is better than Ryan Mcdonaugh, yes, OEL? Maybe not at the moment but he could be. This is his first contract he's going to sign outside of the entry level. I'm going 6x6 and I don't think he will have an issue with this at all. He is NOT getting 8x8, only chance of that is if the Colombus kid somehow gets a huge contract and like 8+ and Provy's camp pushes for the same type deal. He isn't getting OEL money.

Other then Hart, Provorov is probably the most important piece to this team moving forward. Why do I try to nickel and dime him now. I go 8 at 8 and don't blink. If he does go less, gravey.

I'll fight for money on other guys. Stay the course with role guys. My franchise number one defensman i pay and sit back.

It's weird how I still think of him first and foremost as a near elite defender. His points, for some reason, seemed to come sneakily under the radar for me last year. Each time I look at his stats I'm still shocked at how well he produced at that age.

So everyone on here seems to think our cup window will be in 2-3 years, those years while his contract is a below market value of his play will allow us to maneuver during free agency/trade deadline to strengthen the team. With so many guys coming off the books in 4-5 years we can deal with it then. Those dollars saved from PRovy could pay huge dividends when making a cup run.

16 even strength goals is absurd to think about from a Dman.

Exactly

The guy is a fitness fanatic and a physical specimen, there is little chance his game falls off at all between now and age 30 too. If you can get him for 8 years in his prime for a smidge over 8 millon per, lock him up.

Doughty got 7 million coming off his ELC. That was 2011.

Provorov is getting 8. Maybe you get lucky and it's 7.5

Yup, 25 minutes a night in playoff competition, against the other teams top lines and top pp units, all at the ripe old age of 21. Yeah, you're gonna get him for 6 million per!

Maybe he signs for 6 x 6, but I think 8 x 7.5 would be a better deal for the Flyers.

Look at it from Provorov and his agents side. They know he is the top defender and franchise player for this team. You look at Doughty's deal in 2011 coming off his ELC. It's pretty comparable. It's 2018 now. 8 for 8 looks good. After that he can look fro another big deal if he is still playing at that top level.

I don't think you are factoring in how much salaries are about to increase after the signings of this summer and the cap about to hit 80 million. Today's 8 million was 6.5 just a couple of years ago. Tyler Myers got 5.5 per coming right off his ELC and that was 7 years ago. Provy may not get 8, but it if he goes 8 and I think that's what Hextall will be aiming for, it won't be less than 7.5 million per.

Thanks for providing the transcript. It was a good read.

It was funny that someone asked about De Haas being the #7 when he's not even on an NHL contract. I think Hextall will sign one of these guys as insurance since Morin is out till 2019. The longer they go without contracts, they cheaper they should be.

Yes, and that was 2011. If this was happening today, Doughty would be getting 8 years and 75 million.
