Pretty content with the JvR deal. Some top flight winger depth was needed on the left side.

I really want the Flyers to re-sign Simmonds. He's exactly the type of player the Flyers need to win a Stanley Cup, even in a reduced role in the twilight of his career.

The best part of the Tavares deal is that Toronto is an instant Stanley Cup favorite. The pressure mixed with the ridiculous Toronto media / Canadian coverage should prove to be a wonderful blend of 'what could go wrong'.

The pressure's all on them now!

TK has improved greatly but still is a bit of a wild hair. Give him a fair contract for 3 years which will keep him as a RFA when it's up. If he grows into the player we hope he can be in the next couple of years, then you go from there.

He racked up the majority of his points last year playing alongside G and Coots, which probably will increase provided he takes his D game a little more seriously and remains on the first line. That will be the key for Travis. If he's demoted (as he was at the end of last season in order to balance the lines, as per Hakstol), his numbers will more than likely be negatively affected.

Provo is in a whole different place altogether. Lock him up now. No question.

- 77rams

If you bridge TK, you are going to be in trouble in 3 years.

EDIT - I also don't expect him to be playing with those kinds of players for the foreseeable future. He's too good to be playing without additional talent.

"The only thing that keeps nak from being a nhl player this year in my eyes is bad penalties and suspensions. He is better than leier and weise without a doubt in my mind."

I don't get to see NAK at all. But, I thought - from what I've read - the issue with NAK is his skating and on the small side. If you're going to be small, you have to be fast. On the plus side, he's got good offensive up side - which is limited at the speed of the NHL.

Every situation is different. Can't compare what happens with one team to another. The fact was that Manning was better. Can't confuse talent and upside with current level of play.
- MJL

That's not a fact. The only fact is that Hextall let him go without even making an offer, and there's clearly a disconnect between players Hakstol sees as vital to winning a playoff series (that of course they lost in brutal fashion), but that Hextall sees as not even worth $2-$3m when he has about $10m in cap space.

Giroux had a great season as a LW forward last season but we're thin in the middle, he has arguably the best hands on the team and one of the best faceoff men in the entire league. I expect G to start the season on the winger but to pretend moving him back to the middle isn't an option is silly. The signing of JvR just gave us more options and I personally would love to see G, Jake and JvR at even strength together at some point.

With this signing, Hextall fast tracked the team. I didn't feel like we were a playoff team on June 30th. I do now.

Hextall spoke about extending Simmonds on NHL.com. He wants to keep him a Flyer is what he said. I believe him. Let's go!

I'm excited for Toronto.

He's not small, though. He was over 200 pounds at camp last year.

You're conflating things there and trying to use that as justification for your stance. Only problem is it doesnt account for growth of younger players. Hextall is expecting players like Haah and Sanheim to take steps in development and become better players. Room has to be made for that to happen. None of that changes what the reality was last season. Unless the Flyers were going to move Gudas or MacDonald it did not make sense to bring Manning back at that money. Most likely Manning wanted to play somewhere where he felt he had a better shot at the top 6.

Oddly, I think I'm more concerned with splitting Coots and Konecny.

It may cost more if he turns Hakstol's head and Hak continues to give him first line responsibilities. If he doesn't progress as to the coach's liking, well, we've seen the result last year. His production was remarkable when placed up on Coot's line, both in points and +/-, but despite that, we also saw how quickly it came to an end when he was moved down.

I just don't believe his contribution at this time warrants a long term contract, unless it's at a very team friendly price.

It's a gamble either way. I would maybe wait until January and see where he's playing and what kind of production he's kicking out and revisit the contract then.

I understand both sides of the argument about Manning. The problem with both sides of the argument is the two sides keep coming back to the Flyers and why he was let go. For me, that's simple. Do want to over pay for a potential 7th defenseman on this team because Hagg and Sanheim have got to play. The real question for me when it comes Brandon Manning, does Manning make the Black Hawks better after just missing the playoffs.

Travis Konecny was one of the highest scoring wingers in the NHL last season when paired with Giroux and Coots. If they plan on using him in that role, then it would be smart to sign him long term before he commands the asking price of one of the highest scoring wingers in the NHL

We've seen plans change quickly depending on TK's overall play. That's the interesting X factor in all of this, at least for me.

I think that's my point. He should be playing on the top two lines, with top line talent. It would be a waste of skill if he's with guys like Laughton or Weal. His defensive game is not as strong, but if he scores 45-55 points a year, I think you can deal with that.

I agree, your point makes perfect sense.

The thing that worries me is the continual short leash Hak has concerning Travis.

Tavares is a great player but the headline: Biggest signing in Leafs history, is too much. They replaced JVR with a better player and more assists (only one more goal scored last year). A more important position, C, was filled as well. Yes, they will be better and they could win some playoff rounds but I agree the city needs to take a breather. 11M for one player, a 1B C, is hard to swallow and they will have cap issues in a year or two. Will be exciting to watch however it goes.
