If the Flyers are still looking to sign a veteran Dman to a 1 year deal on the cheap to be the 7th guy on the roster, here are 4 guys that could fit the bill:

Cody Franson
Dennis Seidenberg
Andrej Sustr
Patrick Wiercioch

Not much out there in FA if they are still looking for a 3C, and I still think a trade could happen. But, if he was willing to sign a one year deal, Mark Letestu could be a short term fill.

I still have interest in Luca Sbisa. Solid skater. Can play physical. Has skill. If you could get him cheap and short term then it could allow you to move on from Gudas.

Yeah, I'd take Sbisa over Gudas. I was just looking at guys they could reasonably expect to sign to one year deals. I'm guessing Sbisa is at least hoping for a 2 year deal.

edit: would be a bit concerned about the amount of time he missed due to injury last year too.

I'd be ok at 2 years. Still gives you a good vet and with some uncertainty on the back end(Myers, Morin, others) just because they haven't proved anything yet i wouldn't mind having a little insurance.

Maybe go 2 years and can keep the cap hit down.

I wonder if he plays both sides? I’d definitely have interest in the player.

As much as Gudas annoys me with suspensions and general dumbassery of hurting his own guys, his underlying possession numbers are way better than Sbisa's.

I mean, even last year, where it was regarded that Gudas had a bad year, his possession numbers were far better than Luca Sbisa's.

If I was going to jettison Gudas, it wouldn't be for Luca Sbisa.

reading all the articles about the prospects camp you get a real good feel of how much depth the Flyers really have. It is a real good thing. Great to see Laberge coming around.Really stoked about the size and skill of the forwards. You can see why Hextall had no issue going with smaller forwards in this years draft, Farabee seems to be a real sniper. Ratcliffe right now is a wow. I just heard of Dehass, anyone have some scoup on him? 24 with good size on the D?

Frost, if he is at 184 now, he probably can get to 190, if it makes sense. I know he could play in the world juniors but I hope if he earns it, he stays. I know, I know, Hextall will say it is not just about camp, it is about can he play 82 in the NHL and I agree with Hex, but I hope Frost can.

Flyers need 2 surprises from their prospects this season, if they get that, I don't think they will need to make any other moves, unless it is a move that blows hextall away

James de Haas is an AHL player. Splits time between Phantoms and Royals, usually filling in admirably when there are injuries to the defense (aka always)

See the edit to my last post re his injury history. Unless the cost was dirt cheap, I'm not signing him for more than a year.

Good point. It comes down to cost and where Gudas fits in on the roster. If Gudas has slipped below Provy, Ghost, AMac, Sanheim and Hagg on the roster and Myers is nipping at his heels, then you should consider moving him if you can get a somewhat decent return. No point in carrying a 6/7 guy with a cap hit of 3.35 million for 2 more years. In that case, a guy like Sbisa, who coming off a tough season due to injury, may be willing to sign a one year deal for say 2.5 million could be a smarter way to go.

However, if you expect Gudas to be a 4/5 guy and a significant player on the PK, then you hold on to him.

Oh, for sure. If you jettison Gudas, for me, it has to be one of the young guys we have that supplants him and you keep Sbisa around as a veteran 7th defenseman in the Cote suite.

I wouldn't strictly get rid of Gudas specifically for Sbisa. For me, it would have to be opening up a spot for Myers or Morin or whoever, and you keep Sbisa around to be the spare 7th guy and give beat writers a chance to recycle stories about that one time they tried to make Sbisa a forward.

I almost feel like anyone now would need to be pretty cheap.

I still get the sense that a trade will happen. I know what he has said about Simmonds and I understand what he brings and what Bill has written but i just get the feeling that with a lot of teams desperate to add scoring, the true contending teams, I think Simmonds could be a hot commodity with teams who missed on Skinner and Tavares.

AZ was said to be big on JVR. Can you work something out where they get Simmonds, who can come in and be there Shane Doan, and the Flyers get a 1st rounder and prospect?

Dylan Strome's skating scares me a bit but he still moves much better than the Strome we drafted, LOL. All kidding aside, he's got great skills and size, good hockey sense, and plays well in all three zones. Put him between 2 speedy wingers and I think he can be at least a good 3C at the NHL level and perhaps a capable 2C in a year or 2.

Not sure if Arizona would move him, but if they were willing, I'd offer Simmonds and a 2nd for Strome and a 1st. However, I doubt Arizona makes that deal, but you never know.

Hextall seems to be high on him, one article even mentioned him having a shot at making the big club, probably just hype but he has the size

the Flyers are stacked, probably 3 deep at each position. It made the JVR signing all that much better, didn't give up any assets.

I'm good if they do or dont sign another FA or if they do or dont trade. If they trade I know Hextall will get good value.
