Foregoing his college degree to go to utica probably isnt something he would be willing to do. I imagine he says its either canucks or michigin. - Codes1087
Wrong again. Hughes literally said he'd play in Utica if he didn't make the team on draft day. He said he fully intends to make the team.
He also said he has no problem going back to college if Benning wants that. Look, it's his 3rd choice. This is a dead topic.

You presume a degree is why he went to college or why any player does so. Overrated when NHL money is so much higher than any degree he would get.
He can always get his degree over time. - Nighthawk
Narratives. Doesnt matter when all the info contradicts the narrative.
Hughes is not interested in college. He's been petty clear about his intentions. With that being said, he picked college to fast track to the NHL. Now he's in control in several ways. First, he's not trapped in the 20 year old regulation for junior players. He confidently feels he can make the NHL before half way through he's 20th year. If he does sign this summer, his UFA date is accelerated giving him more control over his future. If a team he despises picked him on draft day, he also could have finished college without signing. The kid knows exactly what he wants and went for it. He's scary confident for his age.
Since college is his 3rd choice, I'm going to assume it was about his hockey career and not about post secondary.

A much prettier avatar. You should be ashamed of yourself for having a Leaf as an avatar.😁 |

Would you consider the Leafs the Cup favourites with that D core? - storm88
People quickly forget that JT was playing with really good players on the Islanders. People forget how many over the top moves became over the flop in the NHL. Let's be honest, when you discuss over the top, it's basically a already dominate playoff team being discussed not one that can't get out of the 1st round yet.

Ya, I thought he was pretty clear about turning pro asap. He sounds very confident in his ability and seemed thrilled too be selected by Canucks.
I believe the Weisbrod connection had a lot to do with the last point. |

If everyone is healthy, and they aren’t planning on trading anyone, Hughes should go back to school (sign the BB special), Pettersson should go back to Sweden and really dominate (hopefully playing C), AG, Dahlen, Lind, Gaj and the rest of the crew to Utica.
Next year, no Granlund, hopefully no Gagner, a miracle if no Eriksson, then you have all the new tough guys, and there will be space for your skilled youth to make a push. - 1970vintage
JB has a history of making space for young players even after he signs fresh depth. What suggests he would be planning to hold on to 12 bottom 6 players(not including plugs in the top 6) after telling us he plans on playing the youth? It's common sense to send him to college but JB has a lot of wok to do to sort out the log jam and he has made many comments about making room.
I would not risk letting go of Hughes right now. If his UFA status is pushed a year further down the road... this kid my start looking at a team who drafts his brother or continuing down the path of being in control of his future.
You don't have a player like that fall in the draft, watch him have success against men for a year, and when given the opportunity to lock him down... send him to school. Don't think of this as a junior player scenario. No GM is going to take that risk especially over players who are fringe NHLers clogging up spots. It's all in Hughes' court... he wants a contract.... you give it to him. There is no wait and see til after camp...

Habs went need says it all yuck
Ottawa saw Tkachuk the bigger need
Zona went nutbar...hockey graveyard
Wings forced Zadina aah geez says Holland if i must
JB says heh kid Van is hockey crazy in every way bar nothing
Automagically Hughes sees himself playing in the pros in a hockey town

LE i will give you.
Gagner only a stop gap who be gone soon in various sorts of ways.
The 3 UFA’s if nothing else fill needs that we didn’t have other than fillers of AHL calibre. The money is moot IMO & the term is sufferable & buyouts can happen. Injuries are always a problem & we have nobody in the system to play their roles. Explains resigning Archie & who in hell wants more of Chaput & Megna? Hello Habs the team claiming a no rebuild. Yeah right 😂😂 |
