5 years for a 29 year old is term I can live with. He was probably the best free agent available behind Mr. Indecisive. And the Flyers still have a boat load of cap room going forward even with JVR at $7m.

What I like best about Hextall improving the roster is the pressure it puts on the 4th year coach to win at least one playoff round.

- Feanor

That's fair. Because all things being equal, I think they can/should.

They weren't ready to beat the Pens last year. I was wrong about that. But they're one year older and the young players saw what was up. I know you aren't enamored with the coach, who I have little issue with normally. But yeah. This is a results-oriented business. At some point, winning is what you have to do

Will Simmonds be moved before ufa? I think they ride out the deal and let him go to ufa. This will be a playoff team
- Just5

That's what I would do. Let him play in peace and rebuild his value, ride out the contract, thank him for his service

It’s so nice to see hex open the wallet, we got a good addition with jvr and filled a gapping hole, I’m still hoping for Tavares, I think some other teams jumped in after his original 6 and that is what is taking longer, also thinking Simmonds is a goner maybe in a deal for planarian or something, after signing jvr makes me think some other stuff is also in motion, HEXTALL!!!

In regards to the cap, I'm really not concerned.

Lehtera, Weal and Raffl are all off the books after this season, that totals 8.8 million. If you replace each of their roster spots with kids on ELCs, you are looking at a savings of at least 6 million.

Both vet goalies are in their final year. Even if you assume they bring in another vet to pair with Hart in 19-20, they should be saving at least another 1.75 million in goal next year.

Gudas and AMac will both be going into their final year in 19-20. At least one, probably Gudas, will be moved. Assuming his spot is taken by another kid, you are looking at roughly 2.5 million in savings. And finally, they can just waive Weise in the last year of his deal and save another million.

Finally, the cap really isn't an issue for the Flyers.

I keep reading this and smiling

I can be as impatient as anybody and it's been torture waiting for them to get the cap to this point, but they have and I'm gonna enjoy it

I see the roster as:

Giroux - Couturier - Konecny
JVR - Patrick - Voracek
Lindblom - ? - Simmonds
Raffl - Laughton - Weise

Scratches: Weal, Leier
Minors: Lehtera

- xShoot4WarAmpsx

They'll likely waive Leier before Lehtera, it was clear that Hak has no trust in him by the way he was used as the season went on last year. I'm also hoping a kid like Aube-Kubel can beat out Weise and they can waive that useless piece of crap as well. Other than that, this could be how they roll assuming they add a 3C from outside the organization, which is far from a lock.

I don't think the JVR signing necessarily means that Simmonds won't be re-signed. The JVR deal definitely helps set the market though.

If 4th liners like Beagle and Roussel are getting deals averaging 3-3.25 million per, than JVR at 7 million per is a damn good signing.

I don't see leier as a nhl player at this point. His best attribute is skating in circles doing nothing.

Both in term and AAV, it's a solid deal for a good player.

I'm more nervous about Simmonds at age 32-34 than I am JVR, mainly because while Simmonds has proven that he can score goals, I don't know that his body is going to hold up as well as JVR's

If they project that Simmonds can truly help them for another three years, I'm not terrified of a four or five year contract at a fair number. If Simmonds wants big dollars and term and has a big season this year...that's a tough call. I'm just a guy on a message board, but if it's me, I'm really, really, really, really leery of four-plus years at big dollars

I think so too. It would be interesting to see what assets he's willing to put in play.

I don’t see a future here at all for Simmonds with jvr in the fold long term. Wingers are coming organizationally, And the top 3 contracts on the team are now all wingers.

You'll love JVR

probably not for the money he will get...but he's a unique player. Seems like a good guy to have around as well

At the risk of sounding like someone who’s suggesting, “Let’s get the band back together,” I’d really like to see Hexy bring back Maroon for size and added toughness.

There's some interesting guys. Winnipeg has a couple guys I'd be curious about, but it's hard to project what they'd do with 3rd-line minutes

I predict there will be a lot of times that the fan base loves JVR but there will also be a lot of times that they are frustrated with him.
