I think the best low risk high reward signing is Simon Despres to a 2-way contract. Apparently he’s turned his life around, he’s willing to sign a 2-way deal, he was once very effective, and it’s super low risk
- WSCTeton17

I think the problem with him is that no one will insure him because of his injury history. Wouldn’t hate the idea though.

I mean if it’s a vet minimum or two way contract I don’t see a ton of downside.

Agree. If it's not going to 'move the needle' so to speak on the cap, it's a no brainer.

So would it be 650k NHL & ? Ahl? When he plays in The A our cap hit is only the lower contracted number - 250k for example? What is league minimum for the A?

So those wanting Green as a comparison to sign rather than JJ, throw 5.3m in the calculator & let's see how the cap is.

Who is the other 1? Injury prone & worse playing record (or comparable to) than Tanger - De Haan?

I'll wait & see if JR has left a stained handkerchief in his top pocket.

What’s the other dimension? He won’t play power play in Pitt unless his game does a 180. He hasn’t been killing penalties the last few years. He’s not a big physical presence. He’s fast and he uses speed to generate offense - what is the dimension that I’m missing?
- WSCTeton17

That would be the low hockey iq dimension. (or so we are told )

Some people think PK can be done by anyone, but clearly looking a thing the Pens team last season, some are better than others. The only problem is you cannot see how a player will play by looking at the stats any stats not just analytics.

I’m a firm believer that anyone CAN penalty kill. It’s a skill that you can learn. I just think that a lot of guys don’t care to learn. I remember both in juniors and college guys not knowing how to react. Some just don’t care. It’s a “dimenson” they don’t care for

It would be smaller. My guess is he would likely get $85,000 in the A. If he doesn’t make the team, his cap hit won’t effect the big club. It’s a non issue from that standpoint

It appears pretty obvious that teams are waiting around for the JT decision. Since Dreger basically confirmed that the Pens were "listening" on Brassard, I wonder if we could take advantage of one the losers of the JT sweepstakes. I know people around here want to keep him, but he's an UFA and some center starved team may over-pay.

Done?

Would you rather have E.Kane or J.Van Riemsdyk? Same price for both players.

Hasn't Tyler Ennis played with Sid in the Canada National Team? I don't think he would be bad for us. I'd take a gamble on him for a 1 year $0.75M deal.

I know he’s technically third center, but so was staal and he was still getting a ton of ice time between special teams and being deployed with Malkin at times. I just don’t see how he’s gonna be a waste per se. Obviously the factor being he rediscovers his game

Unless we get something crazy back, I don’t see JR sending him to an eastern contender. He’s a rental so non contenders probably are out. COL/WIN, depending on who gets Stastny- CHI, EDM (if multiple players are involved), possibly LA, and SJ. I think their are definitely pieces from those teams we would want.
Would anyone be interested in a deal around Brassard and Myers?

Reaves was highly underrated by Pens fans. I’m glad we’re not paying him near 3 million, but he had more to give here and Sully just didn’t use him

Off course I would. Myers is a decent D-man. Ideally I'd like to bring someone with some term left (2-3 years).

So you're saying not everyone can PK (it's ok, I'm not going to argue with you, I'm kidding.)

Well we gave up a 1st, a top prospect, and 2 roster players for him (one 2nd/3rd pairing D and a 4th liner who apparently many had an interest in and we gave up a 1st for). He is a top 2 pairing center who played injured for us and was averaging a point per game before the injury. So I would say he is worth a top 4 winger or top 4 d plus a high round pick. Idk though if JR gets a bidding war I assume the price may go up due to him being the top available player. He may try for a little less than Duchene last off season because we really don't need to move him
