Right on Fenrir with E. Karlsson, as I wrote earlier with him being injury plagued, in addition to having to pick up most to all of Bobby Ryan's annual $7.25M/4 year contract, and trading high for him as well.
I only mentioned Kovy in relation in that if Gorton would actually want Karlsson and Ryan, then they should have been more serious in going after Tavares first instead, which may have likely showed Kovy that the team would have a better chance to reach the postseason. That may have delayed him signing with L.A., to sign here instead, just as L.A. may have promised him that they would do all they could to re-sign Doughty. (Could that be the reason for his insane salary they gave him in term?) Then as Hank has said, once you're in, you never know, a la the near perfect quest by the Vegas Knights in their very first NHL season. - RangerSaver
Considering teams are still waiting on Tavares, and that we probably had zero chance anyways, I don’t get how Kovy decision would’ve had anything to do with us. I’m not all for taking on Ryan, but if it means lowering the ask on Karlsson then maybe. If they take back someone like Smith and retain some salary? Ryan is 4 years younger than Kovy, who there’s no guarentee he puts up numbers like he used to. Probably can get same production out of Ryan.
I Definately don’t get the people that wouldn’t want Karlsson. Since lockout season he played full 82 games 3 straight years. Year before lockout, 81 games. Last year he missed 11 games, the most of his career. Considering what went on in Ottowa, I’m guessing he could’ve played more if necessary. His other seasons since rookie year where almost full seasons as well, so I don’t get the injury prone crap. As far as age, he just turned 28, as compared to a “younger guy” like Panarin who will be 27 at start of season. Karlsson would also fill one of our biggest needs, right D, compared to Tavares who wasn’t really a need |

When will these owners learn? Doughtys deal is approx. 3 years too long. Jack Johnson gets a 5 year deal ---- are you kidding me? With the "crazy" season now upon us, I don't mind Gorton sitting on the free agent sidelines.
I think Belesky should be given a shot in training camp. His high salary doesn't impact the team considering all of the cap space we currently enjoy. He may very well benefit from a clean slate and resurrect his career.
The only trade that interests me is getting Panarin. He is still young enough that he will be in his prime as this team goes through its rebuild. He is a star talent that can be a core member of our team for years to come. He can perhaps lead our new generation of Russian/Eastern European players too.
Karlsson, Nash and others simply don't interest me or further our rebuild. I am curious to see how creative Gorton can be and utilize our ample cap space to our advantage...

Karlsson is a year and 4 months older than Panarin... furthermore, we are pretty deep with wingers. Now and future.. not so much with right d men |

Deep with wingers? Karlsson would be a terrible mistake. |

It's not really about "learning"...the price is what the market says it is, more or less. Want Doughty for a few more years of his prime? You gotta pay him those years on the back-end. The team's aren't the only ones with leverage, players have plenty of it too. |

That too, especially now with an expansion team and another on the way...I think it's going to keep rising steadily. The financial exposure on those big deals lessens over time. |

Yeah. I agree. The Habs just took about 5~ million on the cap for nothing. Odd. |

Couture’s new contract with San Jose has no negative affect on San Jose’s ability to sign Tavares. This was factored in, and if Tavares signs, the team still plans on re-signing Joe Thornton to a one-year deal. |

Well that's fair, although if he were willing to sign a 1yr deal I don't see the risk. But I have bigger fish to fry today.

Team has the hammer for fist 5 years than the hammer goes to the players, if they play well, and all of them in every sprt get paid on back end when they past their prime. Nature of professional sports. Get paid for past performance |
