So is #19 available with Leafs for Tavares to wear?
- LeftCoaster

We were going to give him #91 but our new GM Mad Max, already promised it to Sergei Fedorov and signed him to a 6 yr deal for $42M..

I always thought that'd be a great number for Matthews to wear. Instead he's wearing a (frank)ing goalies number...

Same with Nylander...

Let's pretend they beat Boston then get swept by Tampa Bay. They still didn't really go anywhere and they still have a bunch of UFAs walk for nothing. It's the same thing.

And yeah, if this year they had two or three more picks at the draft, they'd better off right now. People were busting their loads on trading down to get Sandin because it meant an extra 3rd round pick and Dubas "got his guy". Just imagine if he had another 1st round pick and a couple more 2nds what he could have done.

- Unholy_Goalie

Dubas would've just traded down 3 more times, with those 3 picks..

Just wanted to remind everyone, when a UFA walks you don't get nothing, you get cap space back. Cap space is an asset in a cap system. Carry on.

Why not?

How about Dobson who dropped to 12th?

If Dubas is sitting there with two 1st round picks, four 2nd round picks and he wants to move up, he has plenty of assets to move up with.

Who is now allowed to resume his career.

Would be interesting if he came back. Even just to the NHL in general.

Not necessarily. They could trade him for a good, younger guy who makes less money to a team that wants to improve immediately at a time like the trade deadline.
- Unholy_Goalie

ummm...Leafs are trying to win the cup....they won't be trading better D for younger D.

Depends on the trade. Point is you get cap space back by letting UFAs walk. Cap space is a valuable asset.

He was still better than Beauchemin in a reasonable amount of time. And Gardiner is worth way more than Beauchemin was in 2011.

It's not much different than what happened with JVR. He had a career year as a pending UFA and the Leafs kept him hoping to make a push. They got nothing for him, they lost in the 1st round and now they either have to overpay him to stay or watch him walk away for nothing.

It's just basic asset management. Don't lose assets for nothing.

- Unholy_Goalie

Yep agreed! ..jvr bozy Leo Moore ..should of all be gone!..and don't get me started with the turtle neck trade

Did you watch the draft? No picks in the top 15 were traded..

I doubt that would've changed, unless Dubas traded all 6 of those picks for 1.. Talk about wasting assets..
