Happy with the picks, happy they are not going for a quick rebuild, a few years of pain to come but that's ok, best way to improve in the new NHL
- Symba007

In fairness to Bergevin and the Habs, really don't see how they could have avoided picking Kotkaniemi. There are no centres in the system, Zadina or Tkachuk might be better talents, but the Habs needed a centre. If Kotkaniemi turns out as good as Vincent Damphousse for example, they did ok. In the NFL, (which I don't follow much) I believe teams draft out of need, not the best available talent. In this case, it was justified IMO.

William Nylander is one of the best young hockey players on the planet. He posted two 61 point seasons on the only two full years of his ELC. He’s a worlds MVP. Nobody is trading him for Chris Tanev or your favourite team’s mediocre goddamn defenceman.

Gardiner was acquired in 2011. He played 75 games in 2012. It doesn't have to take forever.

And whether the Leafs want to or not, contending won't happen for a few more years anyway so better off saving the cap space and getting a guy who will be part of the future than risk losing Gardiner for nothing or overpaying him to stay.

- Unholy_Goalie

Gardiner might have played in 2012.

But he wasn't as good as he is today, not even close.

Hell I'd dare say he was pretty bad. Sometimes it takes a few years for players to achieve their potential.

It's going to be an interesting decision for the Leafs.

He was still better than Beauchemin in a reasonable amount of time. And Gardiner is worth way more than Beauchemin was in 2011.

It's not much different than what happened with JVR. He had a career year as a pending UFA and the Leafs kept him hoping to make a push. They got nothing for him, they lost in the 1st round and now they either have to overpay him to stay or watch him walk away for nothing.

It's just basic asset management. Don't lose assets for nothing.

Erik Karlsson and Bobby Ryan are likely to be traded to the Vegas Golden Knights “sooner rather than later”, per TSN’s Mike Kelly.

They kept JvR (and rightfully so) for the playoff push.. Management was expecting the team to go a deep playoff run.. Contrary to what you might think, the Leafs did believe that the could beat Boston, and they almost did..

Wrongfully so. They over estimated their chances and lost in the 1st round and got nothing for their UFAs. They almost got beat in 5. Two miracle games from Andersen was the only thing that made it seem close.

I'm fairly certain Leafs still thought they could beat Boston in the playoffs on trade deadline day.

If they could've held on for 20 more minutes, it would've looked like an even better move..

Not necessarily. They could trade him for a good, younger guy who makes less money to a team that wants to improve immediately at a time like the trade deadline.

Let's pretend they beat Boston then get swept by Tampa Bay. They still didn't really go anywhere and they still have a bunch of UFAs walk for nothing. It's the same thing.

And yeah, if this year they had two or three more picks at the draft, they'd better off right now. People were busting their loads on trading down to get Sandin because it meant an extra 3rd round pick and Dubas "got his guy". Just imagine if he had another 1st round pick and a couple more 2nds what he could have done. Maybe he trades up and gets one of those really amazing D prospects.
