"If Gardiner is amenable to staying in Toronto and giving them a discount, then an extension could be signed after July 1"
Dubas: Hey Jake, do you like dinosaurs?
Gardiner: I love dinosaurs!
Dubas: Would you like a pet dinosaur? I have a triceratops - and he comes with a dinosaur cage and dinosaur food and everything!
Gardiner: I love dinosaurs!
Dubas: Fantastic! Now, dinosaurs are quite rare, so you'll have to sign this piece of paper that indicates you'll look after the triceratops. Just write your name at the bottom, under that weird line that says "6 years, $4 million per year."

On a serious note: we need Gardiner to resign. He's a quality top 4 D, despite failing the eye test once and while with some questionable decisions.
But hey, let's go out and sign Mike Green instead, because grass is greener.

Not necessarily. They could trade him for a good, younger guy who makes less money to a team that wants to improve immediately at a time like the trade deadline. |

Happy with the picks, happy they are not going for a quick rebuild, a few years of pain to come but that's ok, best way to improve in the new NHL |

Overall I think people are pretty happy, except the few francos nuts who would draft every decent prospect coming out of the Q.
Development camp has started with Poehling and Kotkatniemi giving everyone a little hope for the future.
Oh and everyone agrees, since Tavares made it clear he wants nothing to do with us, that we're signing Duclair and Ouellet.
At least it seems we dodged the Jack Johnson bullet of -1000 |

If by good/younger/less money, you mean not-as-good/younger/less money, then why would we do that?
Gardiner's not easily replaceable, not if we want to compete for a Cup in the next few years.
Sign him to a reasonable contract extension, he'll be tradeable when/if one of our prospects are ready (Liljegren/Sandin, etc.). |

Again, that's not necessarily true either. Think back to how the Leafs acquired Gardiner in the first place; Francois Beauchemin.
At the time, they traded an older, established player whom without the team would in theory be worse in the short term. But in the long run, who won that deal? (They got Lupul too)
You just have to find a team out there who wants Gardiner right now and is willing to give up something that's going to be better long term. |

While I get your logic, aren't the Leafs looking to compete in the short term instead of still looking 5-6 years into the future?
They have a good cap situation, good players.... they should look to improve in the next 1-2-3 years instead of trading a solid 2nd pairing defenseman like Gardiner. |

Gardiner was acquired in 2011. He played 75 games in 2012. It doesn't have to take forever.
And whether the Leafs want to or not, contending won't happen for a few more years anyway so better off saving the cap space and getting a guy who will be part of the future than risk losing Gardiner for nothing or overpaying him to stay. |
