He was still better than Beauchemin in a reasonable amount of time. And Gardiner is worth way more than Beauchemin was in 2011.
It's not much different than what happened with JVR. He had a career year as a pending UFA and the Leafs kept him hoping to make a push. They got nothing for him, they lost in the 1st round and now they either have to overpay him to stay or watch him walk away for nothing.
It's just basic asset management. Don't lose assets for nothing.

You do remember the Leafs had to eat Lupul's contract (which actually worked out well for them in the short term) and that in 2012-2013 Beauchemin was a 2nd team NHL all star? Important details.
Either way I don't see most teams trading top young D period. Unless you're the Habs... |
