Like you can have your pick back low? - Pete V
Maybe? I really have no idea. I think Callahan and his deal are god-awful and Johnson, while obviously very valuable, makes a significant amount of money too. If they land Tavares (they won't) or decide to try and add Karlsson into the mix...I could see them pulling the trigger on something like that just to clear a boatload of space quickly. |

You think a package of Sponner/Zucc/Nam/Smith, Lindgren/Hajek/Day/Miller/Gilmour/Crowley/Rykov and a goalie would get Karlsson? - tomburton99

It’s not at all about being a contender next year!!! Of course you don’t trade unless you extend him . I don’t see logic of passing on a 2x Norris trophy winner in the prime of his career because maybe Pionk or DeAngelo become that guy? Look at prospects. We don’t have any right d men!!! You’re just going to waste prime years of guys on team now? There’s certain kids that are off limits, but these opportunities don’t come around often and Gorton should at least explore. - junaka3
I think if Ottawa trades him, a contender will offer something better than what the Rangers would be willing to offer, and I am not willing to offer 'whatever it takes" to acquire Karlsson |

Probably, but I am not entirely sold on that. With the exception of Vegas, most of the true contenders are going to have cap issues and you might just be buying a one year asset (or cap problems).
I just think a Karlsson trade is real tricky because it seems like the guy is intent on testing the market, wants to pick where he wants to be, and acquiring teams may not get the assurances they need that they aren't just buying a one year rental.

I don't think he moves before the deadline if at all. Too much risk to just have him walk like you are saying. But you gotta think Ottawa would like to get SOMETHING for him rather than just let him walk. |

They have to get something for him. He's going to leave as a UFA. I don't think there is anyway he re-signs. And it would be an epic disaster for them if they were left empty handed.
If they wait until the deadline. They would get the rental price. And god forbid he gets hurt or something before the deadline.

I think the price would probably be pretty low. You'd be clearing $10.8M of cap space off their books, more than half of which is dedicated to a guy that may not even belong in the NHL. If you start talking retained-dollars, then the price would creep up. - eichiefs9
Man! I just looked up Cally's stats in order to refute your claim of him possibly not belonging in the league. And while I still think he can be a somewhat useful player, I don't understand how his stat line brought him the contract he's got!?!?!?!? |

What do you think it would take? - Pete V
I’m not sure, but Ottowa not in a position of strength. Karlsson has a mod ntc so that limits teams he can be traded to. Also, what team will take him if he’s not interested in signing long term? I would think return could start with DeAngelo or Pionk as a replacement at right D. Offensive puck moving D man... Zuc , Hajek. Possibly our first round pick next year as they don’t have theirs. (Considering we’ve had 5 last 2 seasons and may still end up with Tampa’s next year I’d be willing to give up ours.) |

Most of us saw that the Cally contract was going to be a disaster from a mile away. I think he really hurt his standing with the fanbase when he was pressing for over $6 million long term.

He's terrible and injury prone. I get that some people love him because "leadership/grit/sacrifice" yada yada yada...but he sucks. He wasn't a great hockey player in NY either, but he was definitely better than he's been in Tampa. |

IDK, he was pretty good in NY. But I do agree he is just not that player anymore. |

Again. Very narrow minded comment based on who you think is a contender. 3 of 4 teams in this seasons conferamce finals weren’t in playoffs year before ( 1 team didn’t exist) you’re looking at Karlsson as a rental where as I’m looking long term. Many so called contenders already have star players locked into huge contracts. |

He's a straight up fourth liner right now. A guy that on the open market might bring land a million contract at most.

I know. He'll be the agitator. But he's 31 coming off a 7 goal season. I get why they are interested. I just don't expect him to do much. |

I think Vegas’ cap space isn’t really as it appears. Most of their roster needs new contracts either this year or next. And Karlsson pretty much controls where he goes now |

but I am actually listening to the NYR GM talk about the direction of this team and I am not hearing one smidge that would make me think that is the direction the Rangers are going.
If the Rangers somehow acquire Karlsson I will gladly eat crow, but the poop aint happenin, and in my opinion, is an absolute waste of time to discuss |
