It's not the net earnings calculation after all taxes that I was keying on in that comment, in which that calculation chart was available on many sources. The key point which has been overlooked is that Tavares could make up for much, if not all of the shortage in earnings difference THROUGH MANY ENDORSEMENTS if he chose to sign with Toronto. That endorsements value would be lower, if existing to any value in magnitude, should he sign with a U.S. based team. His net earnings amounts I posted were only to back up what those differences were with the perceived favorites he narrowed his decision down to yesterday.

Gorton is addressing that need right now, to which some move to acquire a mid level experienced, RH shooting d'man will come down hopefully sooner than later through some means.
One thing that's for sure is that if not coming through a trade or free agent signing soon, it will have to come via a trade only at any later point. That's because the crop of all free agent d'men, especially mid level & up, who will be available as it looks now for 2019 free agency next summer will be scarce at best.
