Dear Rangers,

On behalf of the HockeyBuzz posters of the New York Rangers comment section, we think you totally botched the 39th overall pick. Really? A goalie?

Please consult with us before making any further draft selections or free agency signings, as you clearly have no idea what you are doing.

Best regards,

Some Randos on the Internet

Hey Petey, you know I'm not a big guy on the draft as far as knowing who's who & who might be a better pick than another. It never cease to surprise me the amount of freaking out fans do after these and it's pointless. We won't know for years most likely what these guys really will be, its all a crapshoot.

Hey Brian, I think the first round we may have a better idea on certain players, but once is slips into day 2, it's a scouts game for the most part.

I think the bigger problom is that it’s hard to faith in this scout group. They’ve had dud after dud for the most part, in those later rds. It’s really bad, not sure if you’ve looked for yourself. I only looked recently that’s why I been saying it

That was last year and the Yankees started using it as like a rallying point. That shlub actually wanted the Yankees to give him something like a copyright fee.

Take a look at the chart in this article. Breaks down the percentages of draft picks playing 100+ games (and other things as well) in the NHL by draft position. The reality is, that once you get passed the first two rounds, the % are really damn low that you are going to find a long-term useful NHL player.

Edit: In the third round, you have about a 30% chance of finding that player. Fourth round and later? It's not good.

And if you look at the Top 6 forward/Top 4 D category, it's even worse.

Not saying it’s easy, but they really haven’t hit on anything recently. Buch? Ok. fast? Ok. Obvously Hank but that was eons ago now. This scouting staff hasn’t been under a microscope like they will be now so it hasn’t been that big of a deal. They’ve been competitive for so long and doing it in other ways. Pressure should be on the scouting staff imo. Especially now during the rebuild

We've had moderate success from undrafted players. Zucc and Girardi come to mind

If we go all the way back to Hank, there is plenty of guys that the Rangers hit on after the first round -- Hagelin (6th), Anisimov (2nd), Stepan (2nd), Callahan (4th), Dubinsky (2nd).

But, you are right it's been awhile. Doesn't help that these scouts haven't had much opportunity to draft in the first round much. They have done o.k. in the mid first round with guys like Kreider and Miller, and late first round with Skjei. But, not having a first round pick for four straight years, was tough. Obviously McIlrath was a huge miss.

That ain’t good, no way no how

It’s why I never fully Understood the hated for Sather. He made a contender from scraps pretty much. The scouts are the ones recommending players, he wasn’t seeing all these guys

No doubt. And obviously Hayes was free, and Vesey also (although he needs to prove it).

I'm all in this tank rebuild. I don't care how long I have to wait. Just get me one or two elite talents. Take as long as you need.

yea more recently is my issues. And I left out the first rd pretty much. But it hasn’t been good whatsoever recently. Really since they became legit contenders

Yes, but they didn't draft in the first round for four straight years. Before last year, 2012 was their last first round pick. A couple of years, they haven't even had a pick until the third round (one year they drafted Duclair, Buch and Tambellini). And the more recent years, you can't expect 4th rounders to be in the NHL yet.

I am not saying you are wrong TJ. I am just saying there are some pretty significant mitigating factors that make it hard to judge their performance.

Boo, Gettinger, Ronning, Fontaine, Wall, Day, Gropp and Shestorkin all have a chance to be solid contributors. Time will tell
