At this point, 5 years is pretty much the rest of the Sid-Malkin window. May as well add as many years as possible to minimize the cap hit. Screw it. I prefer Johnson at 8 years at $3.4 mil over Johnson at 5 years at $3.5. Obviously that's hyperbole, but if you can shave off .5 mil off the cap hit by adding an extra year, just do it. The contract sucks regardless.

Putting Sprong with Sheahan on the fourth line is a receipt for disaster. He needs to be in the top 9 with one of our skilled centers. The third line with Brassard is probably the best fit right now.

Just showing it could work. Logical move would be to drop horny to the 4th and hope sprong clicks with Sid. I still wouldn't mind trying Yak for 1 yr/2 mill and sticking him with Geno. Who has more potential at this point Duclair or Yak?

I guess the CBA is up in a couple of years. The next GM can use one of those get out of jail free cards.

Hopefully word of this gets another team to swoop in at the 11th hour and offer him more money and term. Or at least we can pray

I'm tempted to set up a gofundme for Arizona to give them the dollars to sign him.

Didn't think you could talk dollar amounts during the interview period was over on July 1.

So I just took a look at DK's report. He's saying 6 years $14.5 mil. That's a $2.4 million annual cap hit.

I hate the deal and the player, but you know, that's not an absolute disaster. To my earlier point, if we're offering 5 years, that's the rest of the Sid/Geno Era's window. Adding an extra year to get the cap hit down from 3/3.5 mil is good. We still have enough cap space to play around with.

It was asked earlier but I didn't see a response. Where did JJ slot in the lineup on CBJ?

I think he slotted in the press box in the playoffs if I remember correctly.

On the bench as a healthy scratch.

Should we start a pool to see how long Johnson actually plays at the NHL level for the pens? My God this is a dumpster fire of an offseason so far. GMJR had to jettison a good asset in Sheary just to rid the team of his hot-garbage pickup last offseason, then decides to make a longer-term deal with another crap heap borderline NHL defensemen with the cap savings...makes sense.

Why is he agreeing to a longer term deal with JJ than he did with effective/talented defensemen he already signed (Schultz, Maatta)?

2.4 is palatable but the term is egregious. At least they have another 8 mil to spend, but after this signing I’m not so sure that’s a good thing.

This is only a guess, but Oleksiak plays RD too. When he was paired with Cole anyway.

After a certain threshold the term doesn't matter anymore. I prefer 6 X 2.4 over 3 X 5

He was good to great on Kings for the first like three seasons of his career and then fell off a damn cliff. He's sucked for at least seven years.
