Not going to win another cup like this. Sorry.

By signing one of their most clutch playoff performers to a nice term and reasonable cap hit?

Nah, there was quite a few of us that liked the trade and thought he could work out with the Pens, with a change of scenery and that it was a low risk/high reward kinda deal.
- MattStrat

100%

I personally didn't like the trade a the time, but I also didn't freak out about it because like you said, it was such a low risk/high reward deal.

Signing a 31 year old dman with a history of terrible defensive play to a $5/$6M multi-year contract contract is high risk.

I read that after he was not qualified, the Pens offered Kuhnhackl a two-year deal. I'm kind of surprised.

Apologies, I have an 8 month old at home so time is hard to come by. pretty much says he vaults to the top of our prospect pool and that his numbers are extremely impressive for a 17 year old, only Provarov came close to matching his production at that age. Said he reminds him of Letang at that age. Great speed, ability to join rush, able to carry puck through the neutral zone, and great first/breakout pass. Negative is tentativeness and size, wants to see him take control of the play more but thinks that will come with seasoning.

Also, the Athltetic is only $4 a month and has great content, I recommend but to each their own.

I believe I read somewhere that despite his size, he's able to stand bigger players up and can use his body effectively.

I'm really hoping that they bring Kunitz back for a year. I think people took him for granted. His combo of speed, physicality and offensive upside even at his age isn't THAT common. For how physical he is, most players take a ton of penalties, but he's able to be a fairly physically punishing hitter without being a liability.

Me too. I really, really liked him in the bottom 6 and when he signed for 2 mill I really had wished the Pens did it. He is a better PKer than Kuhn let alone everything else haha.

I am always weary of "getting the band back together"...and would prefer to get younger but if Kunitz can be had for ~$1M, that's virtually what an ELC player would cost anyway. But I don't forsee us getting multiple Free Agents unless we clear a ton of space....we need to carefully select that one player....and I'm not sure Kunitz, while miles ahead of Kuhnhackl, is enough of a difference maker.

Even if we were able to shed Sheary and land Grabner, which sounds great, is that a major improvement? Grabner definitely helps on the PK but he has zero playmaking skills...so their point totals are pretty close. If Grabner costs $5M, I'd hestitate to make that move....

Also, does anyone know how much LW Grabner has played? I seem to remember him only as a RW.

for a non-sexy UFA thought...what would you guys think about Greg Pateryn? I would say that's a perfect fit for what we need as a cheap RH #6.

There’s nothing about Kunitz coming back that has to do with nostalgia. He fits the system, still productive and inexpensive.

Honestly, I'd rather have Kunitz than Grabner, especially considering Kunitz will cost a $1M or more less.

Ha... well he's a big, physical RH defenseman, who is a better defensively than any of our #6 or 7 defenseman. Hes only 28 and he can skate at least well enough to not be a liability. He was pretty impressive when we've played against him. He's pretty close to Cole in overall abilities I'd say. Again, not sexy, but checks a lot of boxes to balance our D core...for ~$1M, I'd be interested.

If were looking at RH D close to $1M, its a limited pool. If not Pateryn, Dylan Demelo may be worth looking at. Unless you take GMJR at face value that Riikola could play in the NHL this season.

Joe Thornton as a 4C? Would he take $1m for a chance to raise the cup? OR is it SJ or retire?

Sounds like GMJR might have found a landing sport for Sheary. It will be interesting what he can get for him.

Great news. I have been expecting a Pens/Sabres deal would come along. Sheary will be a good fit for Buffalo. The added speed and ability to move up and down the lineup will probably help them. That +$5M in cap space will definitely help the Pens, regardless of what round the pick is in.
