Both are set to be 24 years old by the start of the season arguably meaning they are what they are and there is no more "potential"
- Feds91Stammer

I'd say that would be true except for the NHL experience factor. We really don't know what ZAR can do once he's comfortable. Simon I think tops out at around the production Sheary had last year, but is better away from the puck.

That said, I think Sheary is a 40-50 point player, but I don't know if he'll get that chance again on this team. Give him to PP minutes and consistent top 6 minutes and he'll be 20 goals every season.

Point is...I think ZAR, Sprong and Simon are a better fit for what the Pens need. I also think a guy like Kunitz who is older, but hits and still can skate fits better. I'm all for trading Sheary if we can bring in Kunitz and possibly Sheahan back.

Nah, ZAR only has 16 NHL reg season and 9 playoff gms to his name after a good run in AHL and a solid college stint. There is still more to see.

Let's say we trade Sheary and it allows us to sign one of Kunitz or Declair and resign Sheahan. This is a potential lineup

Guentzel, Sid, Rust
Hagelin, Malkin, Hornqvist
Simon/ZAR/FA, Brassard, Kessel
Simon/Zar/FA, Sheahan, Sprong

Say we sign Kunitz.... That's Simon or Kunitz as your 13th forward. That's a DEEP lineup and we still may have too many forwards.

Blueger looks ready to make the jump and Sprong's on the 4th line.

I see him as a 10-15 goal guy in the middle pair.

Oh, and I'm sticking with Kunitz and Duclair because that's who the pens are linked to.

Peak age doesn't care what league you play in.

All these 500k “overpays” are starting to add up...

Rust, Shultz, Sheary, Horn (300k),

Take that 1.8 million, toss on Hunwicks 2.2, and dump Hags 4.0, there’s 8 million that gets you a guy like JVR with a million to spare

- RoloTahmasee

I don't see the overpay at all. GMJR pays his players what they're worth. It's close to FA market value with maybe a little savings. Not everyone takes a huge discount to stay with their team. Plus, he's keeping his guys happy. We're getting college free agents, and possibly a player like Duclair, cheaper because they know that they'll get what they're worth on the bridge deal.

I think Blueger's ready to step up. He's smart, not flashy, but produced last year. If he is I see Jurco as a good #5.

Oops... Wrong player lol. Can Jurco play LW? I know he's a left shot.

And, although Jurco had a good season in limited games last year, do you think he's turned that corner? Seems Duclair and Kunitz are both more productive.

Meh, many players don't care about a general stat. Kessel, Kunitz and Eric Staal for example all said to hell with that. Peak age of NHL players does not draw any conclusion on how ZAR will perform on the Pens.

Can play either wing.

Good shot impacts. Good zone entry numbers.

Plays with some bite and has decent hands. Poor usage in DET and a back injury kind of derailed his once promising career.

Guentzel is farther from UFA which keeps his costs down a little.

These really are not overpays. Rust got paid similar to hagelin and hagelin signed at a much lower cap.

Forgot about the back injury. I remember him being promising at one point then kinda disappeared

1.38 5v5 p60 last season

for reference

Galchenyuk: 1.39
Hornqvist: 1.35
Yakupov: 1.3
Rieder: 1.27
Drouin: 1.23
Hertl: 1.22

Duclair: 1.84

Duclair has character concerns and I don't know how well he can be in a bottom 6 role. 2 most common linemates in CHI were Toews and Debrincat.

Edit: Jurco also played well with Sheahan in DET.

Good signing, good player.

Not so sure about chasing Johnson though....... Appears that JR knows something we don't. (I hope)

16 goals in 5 years. Same career points per game as Tom Kuhnhackl. I'm gonna say not who we should target.

Had to keep Rust, deal is fine.

Hags will be gone next year, Sheary might be gone this year. Kessel might be gone this year, but i dont see him ending his contract here. That leaves Gutz and Hornquest and Rust tied up for a while which is good. Still think they need an upgrade on LW and mid pairing Dman.

Comeau and Reider would be a couple of targets for LW.

This signing almost guarantees a trade is going to happen. The million dollar question is who.
