If the Leafs miraculously sign Tavares, Nylander is on the block for help on D immediately. The Leafs need a legit #1 D (at least another top pairing D) and Nylander is the ticket to get that. Maybe you'd keep Nylander for 1 more year to inflate his numbers by playing beside Tavares, but sooner or later, you'd move Nylander to get help on D to balance the team.
If you look at is as: Nylander for Tavares + #1 D, it's a no-brainer. - Unholy_Goalie

Yeah, you take your gently used Nylander there and throw in the ever present 2nd rounder and get to take home your brand new #1 D. Hopefully Dubas knows someone there and maybe he can even get employee pricing! |

Dougie Hamilton has been traded twice. Karlsson is on the block. It doesn't happen every day, but opportunities do present themselves and the more you have to give up, the more you get in return. |

You know, the Leafs might have a bit of a steal with Durzi. This year, he had better numbers than any 1st round CHL dman in their draft+1 year’s from the previous 3 drafts. Also better than Rielly or Dermott’s draft+1.
He only played 40 games, so that might skew his numbers, but he also had surgery on his ankle to remove an extra bone that was affecting his mobility. So that’s something.
Edit: I think going back to 2012, only Josh Morrisey and Tony D’Angelo have had better D+1 seasons in the CHL. Not the flashiest names, but both NHLers.
Edit 2: he had decent numbers last year, too. I wonder why he wasn’t drafted? |

He seems worth taking for sure, even in his second crack at the draft. Leafs management know him very well and have had been pretty good developing the prospects over the last few years. Wouldn't be surprised to continue that steady path from here on out, hopefully to the NHL in 3-4 years.

Because he’s an overager, he’s eligible for the AHL next season. As is Sandin, because he has a SHL contract. Leafs could pop them on the Marlies as a 3rd pairing, and let them start to develop their chemistry. |

Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Marleau - Tavares - Stone (offersheet)
Zucker (trade) - Kadri - Brown
Johnsson - Beagle - Kapanen
Rielly - Brodin
Dermott - Zaitsev
Borgman - Ozhiganov
Hainsey 7th D-man.
Freddy Andersen
Khudobin / Lehner
IF Tavares gets signed, you try and work out a deal with Minnesota on Brodin + Zucker for Nylander. (will be tough to get Ekblad or Seth Jones for Nylander, I don't see any other young RHD-men available able to put in 1st line minutes).
Backup goalies best available right now Khudobin and Lehner.
Offersheet Stone.
Trade Gardiner for picks / prospects.
If you don't get Tavares, keep Nylander.
try and trade Gardiner for a C like Bjugstad from Florida
Hyman - Matthews - Marner
Zucker (offersheet) - Bjugstad - Nylander
Marleau - Kadri - Brown
Johnsson - Beagle - Kapanen
Rielly - Hainsey
Dermott - Zaitsev
Borgman - Ozhiganov
7th D: Christian Frolin (UFA)
Andersen
Khudobin / Lehner
Still like to get Stone on an offersheet - Zucker could be had as well in trade for Gardiner.

in fact.. without going into Leafs' lineup..
I would like following options for leafs:
- sign Tavares in UFA
- sign Beagle in UFA (4th line C)
- offersheet Mark Stone
- trade for Jason Zucker
- sign Khudobin / Lehner as backup goalie in UFA
- trade Gardiner
- if you can get a real #1 young RHD by either trading Gardiner ++++, or - only if you have added Tavares - trade Nylander for that D. Only trade Nylander if all other options are gone and it is for a legit #1rhd (Jones, Ekblad basically).

The Bozek should be paying the Leafs for giving him top PP time since he waltzed into the league as an undrafted rookie and giving him first line quality wingers without ever being punished or held accountable for being poop defensively. He's never once had any adversity thrown his way. Never benched, no matter the mistake. No media scrutiny, all of it just magically leeches into his linemates. He's lived a (frank)ing blessed life in Toronto. |

Leafs are interested in brining him back, sign him to a one year deal, play him next to Tavares, let Tavares turn him into a Moulson or Bailey, then trade him at the TDL for 9 1st round picks.

Bottom line, teams located in cities that have no state tax can offer their players more net income. End of story. The fact that people are still trying to deny this is incredible. - Unholy_Goalie
Having good taxes is great, it means they have poop laws somewhere else in their system...it all evens out.
If it didn't Florida would be one of the best places to live. However it's not, far from it.
So you drop it. |

With the way the cap is expected to go up a Tavares deal is never going to look bad.
Unless Bozak is willing to sign a one year deal for fourth line money it's better for both parties for him to sign somewhere else.
Let's not give Buffalo anything, OK? Nylander is going to be a star in the league, I'd rather have him on our roster. - TrashPanda
I disagree.
Years 4-7 @ 12MM per year is going to look pretty bad. the Isles offered him 11MM per year in NYC (Don't give me the sponsorship speal BS, He has sponsor deals in NYC) its going to take more than 11MM per year to move him.
If I am the Leafs I don't do it.
Tavares is an Elite playmaker, the knock is the speed. The older he gets the slower he will get. (See Corey Perry)
Plus if you give Tavares 12, what does Matthews want? |

He is an elite talent, an extra mil or two isn't going to hurt a team. Those are the types of players that win your championships. |

He's got the tools, just needs the focus. Get him to a contender and put him with some talent and he'll blossom. A right shot with a bit of an edge. Nylander gets allot of favourable press for a 20 goal scorer that plays on the wing with Austin Matthews. He's soft and when Matthews isn't with him, the offense dries up. It's easier to get wingers then defensemen or centres. Can't get better without bold moves. It'll just be the same team as last year, if we don't make a master stroke of a move. - PrinceLH
Bold move, fine.
Not stupid ones.
Not trading Nylander for someone "who needs to focus"

Nope, never heard of her before.
He is an elite talent, I am not denying that. Age catches up with everyone eventually. Will it be a drastic drop off, I have no idea, but I would be weary.
The first 3-4 years of teh deal will be great, but after that, I am not so sure.
If I am Toronto or any team for that matter, I stay away from Tavares.
Let NYI sign him.
