I know I am jumping in late here, but they have/had different goals. Murray wanted to speed it up and win asap, while Botts is not rushing it and taking value in developing prospects (while inheriting some pretty bad contracts, compared to Murray).

Apparently Ennis's contract was so bad, Botts figured he should take on a worse one. Contracts can't be that bad. You claimed we still had room for Tavares and Karlsson. Besides, contracts aren't an excuse for Botts' ineptness of being able to work a trade.
