My Grade: Incomplete
Like all drafts, NOBODY here knows jack squat. People here had favorites going into the draft. Those favorites were formulated off of what OTHERS wrote as their favorites and opinions in articles combined with some video clips and a few games and game highlights that people here saw.
The bottom line is that this is the scouts FULL TIME job. To know everything they can and find out everything they can about these players and everyone here, even the unemployed and keyboard wizards do not have the access the scouts have. Translation : Lets see how it goes, its an unexact science.
My ONLY takeaway from their draft was this: They drafted 10 players, they didn't trade any picks for any veterans so they have for the first time in a VERY long time stuck to their guns and are in a rebuilding mode. Lets be happy about that, because that seems to be the only thing that we all agree on here.
My two other takeaways:
1) I'm sad we didn't get Tkachuk
2) Kravstov and Wahlstrom will forever be linked and measured against each other for as long as they play so now we have something else for Rangers and Islander fans to fight over! |

Agree w/ everybody here, but I just find that some of the problems people have w/ these picks are b/c of assumptions. We and the writers have NO idea as to what the inner workings/discussions were on the draft floor. If NYR took the players they did, where they did, than I think we must default to trusting the decisions that were made since We don't have the same info that the NYR organization did. - rrentz
Sorry Sather and Clark have been here way too long with way too many wasted garbage picks to trust their ability to judge talent especially Clark you wanna give a pass to Gorton fine but if I was as bad at my job as Clark is I wouldve been on unemployment line a long time ago. |

What I read about Wahlstrom is that he as of now requires a good play making center to get him the puck while Kravtsov can make his own shot. In addition have seen where some experts view his shot as almost as good as his skill with the puck. That’s why I am okay with the pick though I preferred Wahlstrom - airjan23
Well if it's one thing Rangers got is play making Center's or players for that matter every one on team would rather pass puck into net or get an assist then shoot and score a goal. |

Could not agree with you more, they are dinasours. They like to think they’re old school gunslingers who like to find the diamond in the rough. Problem is, they’re just old. I feel for Gorton, I’m not sure if he’s nothing more than a mouthpiece for those two windbags. |

Another great Larry Brooks article lol which of Hayes or Zibanejad should Rangers trade. Then mentions Toronto as possible partner if they sign JT with Rangers taking on Horton's contract for a young prospec or 2nd rnd pick no thanks Larry we already got one Head injury problem contract on team with Staal. |

Horton is already basically retired. The Leafs just carry is cap hit for insurance purposes. I'd take back Horton's contract. |

FOR a 2nd round pick though? Hmm wonder if Toronto has any young Scandinavian left handed Defense men in system . |

Scott Wheeler in The Athletic lists the Rangers as one of his losers:
Vitali Kravtsov, K’Andre Miller, and Nils Lundkvist are all prospects I like to varying degrees, but I think the Rangers could have done a lot better with three first-round picks in a pivotal draft for the organization, and my best players available in those slots were Wahlstrom, Veleno, and Jonathan Tychonick — an outcome I’d have much preferred, even submitting Tychonick for the next-best player on my list in Akil Thomas. Jacob Ragnarsson is a defenceman who I quite like, but I’m confident he would have been available later and he likely tops out as a third-pairing guy. I have also seen a ton of OHLers Nico Gross and Joey Keane, two more defencemen with middling upside — though I do believe in Keane’s progression and he can defend really tough minutes. It wasn’t an awful draft but it seems like an opportunity missed, is all. |

A- is awfully generous for day one, considering that they could have traded down and easily gotten Kravtsov with a later pick. And, to your point, a huge overpayment to move up a few spots - AxlRose91

Steve Kournianos, @thedraftanalyst, grade:
Grade: D
This was supposed to be the draft to set the Rangers up for Stanley Cup contention, much like what Craig Patrick and Neil Smith did in the mid to late 1980s. Things started off great with skilled Russian goal scorer Vitaly Kravtsov (ninth), but began to head south when GM Jeff Gorton overpaid an extra second rounder to move up four spots to grab raw two-defender K’Andre Miller (22nd). Swedish puck rusher Nils Lundkvist (28th) stood out against adult competition and has the potential to be their true power play quarterback of the future. What was inexcusable, however, was taking Olaf Lindbom (39th) as the draft’s first goalie to go on the board. Like Miller, the remaining four defenders taken — Jacob Ragnarsson (70th), Joey Keane (88th), Nico Gross (101st) and Simon Kjellberg (163rd) — all lack game-breaking abilities and the potential to be stars in this league. Wingers Lauri Pajuniemi (132) and Riley Hughes (216th) capped off a Rangers draft that began with hope and promise but crashed with a loud thud. |

I repeat again, that presumes the ability to find a team willing to deal that pick. As you saw, no movement trade wise in top 20. Agreed with you on overpayment for Miller deal |

I think his review of the 3-4th round defensemen is stupid. Yeah, most defensemen at that point of the draft of course don’t have game breaking ability. You are hoping that 1-2 turn out to be solid NHLers.
Getting a four pick trade up and a goalie for the 39th and 48th pick is where the Rangers didn’t get the value they should have.
I think the Rangers got some damn good prospects with this draft. Just didn’t think they got all of the value they could.
If this goalie turns out to be a stud, maybe we will see it different.
