I still don't understand how the players have to give up portion of their salary to escrow. Yet the cap still goes up. Shouldn't it only go up IF the players are making their full salaries?

The point of the escrow provision was to ensure that the owners & players each received 50% of the hockey related revenues...which are only estimated in advance (sometime during the prior season). It is effectively a bank account which is paid into during the year, and then paid out at the end of the year, either to the owners or players, depending upon final hockey related revenues.

Having the escrow as insurance against a drop in revenue allows total cap compensation to rise...which then translates to bigger salaries. The cap escalator also contributed to this.

Things have changed and don't get me wrong players get paid very generously to play a game they love but IMO the owners have come out on top of every negotiation.
