It's very nice to fantasize about Tavares playing for the Leafs, however it's not going to happen.
We will instead sign Jay Beagle to replace Moore/Plekanec and hope that the new Swede Per Whatever can replace Bozak.
He will not be up to the job at which point Nylander will switch to centre, promoting Kapanen or Johnsson to the top line.
You heard it here first..

I'm pretty sure we aren't counting on Par Lindholm to be our 3rd line Centre.

If Nylander goes to centre it will be right out of the gate. I'd say it's more likely theyll go after stastny or another centre if they don't get Tavares

I’m always curious to hear people with such definitive reasoning on not landing Tavares. Leafs are 1 of 5 teams that will be talking to him on Monday, why is it so far fetched?
- bryant

Because of the salary cap, unless they decide to trade Nylander, I don't see a way they can pay Matthews, Nylander and Marner big bucks and add Tavares to the mix.
Now that is possible but then we get older and lose a potential point a game player, which I don't think is the direction they are headed, preaching patience and letting the "core" grow together.

If you sign a one year deal when can you sign an extension? 1 year max deal and then sign a reasonable 7 year extension seems to completely circumvent the existing team being the only team that can offer 8 years.

We have enough depth that if we cannot find a decent deal we can sign a 3rd line centre and wait for the season to unfold.

Who said nylander or marner are getting big bucks on this contract?

Possibly, but that will be the booby prize for all those hoping to get Tavares, so tough competition.
Stastny is 32, the term would have to be reasonable.

Nylander's first 2 years he has over 60 points. Unless it's a bridge deal, he will get paid very well.

Ehlers is his closest comparable and makes 6m a year x 7. Is that considered getting paid very well?

Interesting idea, I wonder what the rules are in regards to that. I think they'd be able to sign something late season? Also, if they have his rights i'd think they would be able to sign him for 8 years which would would make it a 9 year deal with this year being maxed. Seems crazy cause nobody has tried something like this yet...

I guess we’ll wait and see what he decides, but with the leafs going to meet with him and his agent, I think that they probably have some different options to try and sign him.

So, we are giving Tavares a one year max deal??
- Hockey_Reverend

Why would he do that? Assuming he gets 7 years at $10-12 million, that's a lot of guaranteed money he is foregoing.
We can "hope" the lure of playing for his hometown team and the chance to play on a contender would drive him to accept a 1 year deal, but business is business. He won't do it.

They have to wait till Jan 1st to extend him if he signed a 1 year contract.

TSN is saying they can only do 7 years after this and Jan 1st is the earliest time they can sign him. Still, that's the 8 year deal with one year being maxed out.

Will be an interesting couple of weeks. Maybe Dubas has a plan to move Gardiner or Marleau (not sure if he has a NMC) to make room.

Also leafs don’t have cap issues this year. They can run with all Matthews, marner, nylander and Tavares.

Then hopefully nylander can have a great year and they can sell high (if then need cap space) and get a good young defenceman.

Either way that have options and assets, no downside to trying to sign Tavares.

I think he gets 100 million on the dot.

15.9 million 1 year and then whatever 84.1/8 is

The pros are making an extra 5 million+ being able to test out a new team

Sure there is risk, there's risk to signing to a new team as well

With a potential lockout in two years, $15.9 in hand might be pretty appealing.

So does this past draft prove Dubas was in charge of drafting last year? Overagers for days.

He sure likes em' 5'9". Dubas likes to look his players in the eyes when they are on skates.
