I thought he was eligible because he played in Sweden before coming to the OHL? - PatC80
I believe this is correct because he is "on loan" to the Soo... |

I've had some good ones over the years but this one is a true classic from the Leafs/Sens thread.
And no he can't. - BlueBallz
I think my favourite part was how after all the summer talk, Matthews scored 40 goals and beat out Laine for the Calder, the Leafs' rookie class shattered records from their 100 year history, the Leafs went back to the playoffs twice and to their best regular season ever, and the Sens imploded, losing their best players for nothing while paying Phaneuf to play for the Kings. I liked it. |

So, I didn't watch the draft yesterday. What's the general consensus? Good picks or Meh? Did we pick all smallish puck-moving defensemen??
What's the thoughts on that Carolina - Calgary trade? Big one, not sure though... seems like Carolina gave too much? |

Folks I'm so confused. It looks like the Leafs will be one of the few teams to get a meeting with John Tavares.
I was assured by UG that there were no reasons why JT would consider signing with the Leafs, but this throws my whole thinking into chaos.
We all know UG could never be wrong, so is this some joke from JT? What gives?
Also, when is the meeting with Nashville? UG told me they are the front runners |

How did Carolina give too much? They got the best defender (best player) and a decent forward and a top prospect. |

Thoughts on the draft. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Reminds me of the year when we had 3 first round draft picks and Floyd Smith used them all to draft 3 players from the Belleville Bulls. The comedy act had the Leafs not having very many scouts and they only scouted Belleville, because of being too cheap under Harold Ballard.
Fast forward to today....another first rounder, another Swedish defenseman. I guess that we have our 3 scouts all in Scandinavia. Not that I actually disagree with the pick, it's just the same old. Speed and grace, with little sandpaper. After watching the two conference finals, you had to see that the teams that got that far, had allot of sandpaper and toughness. The Leafs never seem to address this deficiency. There's a lot more to playing defense then skating and passing. Exhibit A: Jake Gardiner. The Leafs need more defenders with size and strength, that can pass the puck and skate rather well. We have a stable of similar types of defenders, especially in the top 4, that play the same way. Other teams have no fear, to bump our goaltender or go to the front of the net. It's why our goaltending gets allot of rubber thrown at them. Maybe some North American grit is in order, in regards to drafting defensemen.

Honestly.. If Babs cant get past the first round next year with that lineup, then i think its acceptable to start questioning his abilities to win in todays NHL. - Arctic_AARDVARK
If we still have gardiner playing over 20mins, then yes. Question and fire.

You should build a giant wall around yourself (and UG). Make it really big so that neither of you can get out. |

It doesn't make sense to draft for what your NHL roster needs now, because none of these guys will be a factor for several years anyway. The Leafs did draft a bunch of big guys recently.
If you think the elections of Trump and Ford are wins for conservatism, not sure what to tell you.

Can we afford JT?
I don't see how we could possibly fit him under the cap with the young guys presumably wanting to get paid on their second contracts. Gotta save some cap space for defense.

Or maybe they have no fear cause the refs dont call poop when it comes to the Leafs goaltender, hell they even forget about penalties that they were gonna call. |
