Only have to look back a couple of years and remember the call by the fanbase to pay that kind of coin for Steven Stamkos. Lucky for us that didn't happen, considering how much his skill-set has started to diminish. Stamkos was paid for what he'd done in the past. Tavares isn't going to be getting better, so should we pay him for his past glory with the Islanders? Forget it, unless he's under $8 million for 7 years, time to move on. There's enough veteran talent around to fill in on the bottom 2 lines on short term contracts, if we need centre help.

Tavares is just coming into his prime. Doubt the Leafs are able to sign him, if they have the opportunity, it is a no-brainer. Does not insure a cup, but instantly makes Leafs one of the two or three strongest teams up the middle. Stamkos remains one of the best players in the game. These players are in their twenties. Getting a $2 million a year plug to play centre on the third line does not elevate this team.
