I love how people keep saying the league has 'evolved'. I call poop on that. You have always needed a COMBINATION of offensively gifted players as well as solid defenders. Has that even not been the case?
It just seems we have this type of player in abundance already... but whatever, its the 29th pick so meh - Hockey_Reverend
Nashville already had Weber, Josi, Ekholm, and Ellis. Yet they still drafted Jones.
Draft BPA regardless, develop them, then trade for need of equal value. |

My problem with the "league evolving" theory is that it seems to be true for the regular season, but you still need size, and toughness in the playoffs because they still completely change the way the game is called.

It’s part of the reason you saw someone like Ryan Reaves get traded for a 1st round pick at the deadline. |

He was a part of the three-way (nice) trade with LOLtawa and Pittsburgh. |

Then you haven't been paying attention to the league.
I never said you didn't need to be good defender.
Sandin is a good defender by all accounts. |

I hope they draft the biggest, slowest player so people will shut up about size. Who do they think they are...FCN’s wife?

Maybe Tyler Biggs has re-entered the draft.

People just got to complain about something. It's hilarious.
I'm more interested in the other times dubas has lost while trading down - burn

?
Is that true? I haven't really been on the Philly boards.
He seems like a good player, but then so does Dermott. |

1) The post was about how the league has evolved in the regular season, not so much in the playoffs. This is true. You can disagree. I don't care.
2) If you are going to actually put quotes around something I said, don't intentionally leave out the word "SIZE". That was a big part of the discussion. |

i agree.
dermott was a very solid pick, and i like him better than konecny (at least for leafs needs).
i think dermott might eventually surpass rielly on leafs' d depth chart and will become the 1st line lhd.
my problem with moving down is that there is a risk another team gets 'your' player. at draft, leafs weren't that high on dermott nor sandin now - if you are, you don't move down (if anything, you move up to get your guy)
|
|
|
|
In my opinion Sandin is a clone of Liljegren, same height and same style of offensive d-man.
I would have taken Valero or McLeod who are big centers that they need. |

sandin couldnt have been the guy dubas really wanted, since trading down doesnt guarantee that other teams on 25-28 would not pick him.
so it seems that leafs werent really convinced that any of the guys available there was really a guarantee to going to better than the others - and trading down a bit was beneficial.
if you pour millions in scouting and still are not very sure about what players might be better than the rest, that's not a good sign.
or maybe the scouts were very clear, bit dubas just does not give them enough credit and he wants to be the clever guy..
you can say about fenton and wild what you want - but they feel the swedish d-man will become a good nhl-er and they pick him 'off tbe board' instead of hoping he is still around later. - MaximusAurelius

I wasn’t talking about this year. I should’ve clarified. I was referring to the year he was sent to Pittsburgh for their 1st and then they won the cup. It fit his point well. |
