Also that. I think they should have given up the 4th overall this year and see if the Islanders wanted to trade one of theirs for something. - Aaron_85
They should've given it up. It's basically a gamble on their part that next year's pick will be worse, and that's quite the gamble considering the poop show that is the Sens.
I think after all the bad publicity they've had, they were just afraid of the backlash of giving up 4th OA and basically admitting to their fanbase they expected to be hot garbage next year. |

Wonder if Orpik from the Avs isnt a good move?! Stay at home. Slower but hell we ran Polak out there. Give the team a bit of a meaner edge at least. LH shot though but.... Sakic shopping him before buyout so should come real cheap. - Roadrunner75

Agreed. It was a stupid, shortsighted decision by a management group that couldn't admit how (frank)ed they were. |

Would have rather move up to 10th and get Bouchard but the Leafs did pretty well for themselves trading down. But they got another undersized D-man. Skating and passing is nice but at a certain point they need a guy who can do that but has an NHL frame too. Not great but not bad either. |

Hopefully he's still got a growth spurt coming and puts on some more muscle. Not sure we needed this type of player, but if he turns into an NHLer then we can either trade whoever's place he steals, or trade him for whatever we do need. |

Like I said many times before, the Oilers were looking for an offensive defenseman and the Leafs have Gardiner with 1 year left on his deal. Even if it was Gardiner and 25th overall for 10th overall, I would have done it. Much rather trade up and get a big impact prospect than wait and hope a late 1st rounder turns into a top pairing D.
This is one scenario where I think if the Leafs had Hunter still on the staff, they might have moved up to get Bouchard but Dubas stuck with his Soo Greyhound connection. I hope it pans out but at the same time, I think they had a great chance to make a bigger, more impact move today.
Keep in mind, Noah Dobson went 12th, Wahlstrom 11th, and Bouchard 10th. They could have grabbed any one of those three and it would have been a big win. |

Maybe the Oilers wanted a defenceman that didn't make enormous defensive mistakes when it matters?
Or maybe Dubas is less impressed with the players taken around 10th than you are and/or more impressed with Sandin... |

It's Chiarelli; he's an idiot waiting to get robbed blind.
You think if Dubas had 10th overall, he'd move down to get Sandin? I highly doubt it.
He moved down and made the best of what he had but he could have been more aggressive and moved up and got clearly better prospects. |

I can't argue with the first part.
I'm not saying he'd have moved down from 10th if he had it, just to get Sandin. I'm saying he might not have valued moving up to 10th for what was available more than the cost he would've paid to get there.
And even Chia isn't totally retarded. While he's made lots of dumb choices, we can't just assume with no facts available to us, that he would've done some stupid deal giving us 10th at a price we'd be happy with. |

Also, I think he was looking to improve his PP which was 31st last year. Klefbom had the most ice time on the PP and he only had 6 PP points. On a team with Conor (frank)ing McDavid. Gardiner's PP and point totals would have definitely made him consider moving 10th overall for him.
The "cost" could have been Gardiner who has 1 year left on his deal anyway. At some point, they're going to consider moving him or have to pay him more money to keep him. They also have two other guys in the system who they could risk giving the ice time to replace him and add a 3rd candidate by drafting Bouchard or Dobson. |

You're assuming you know Chia would've made this trade of yours. For all we know, Dubas made that very proposal and was turned down. We don't know.
Or maybe Dubas simply thinks Gardiner is more valuable than you do. He gets poop on a lot. Hell, I just made fun of him myself. But he is a good offensive defenseman. For all we know, Bouchard or whoever you wanted might not even reach the NHL. |

I'd say it's a reasonable possibility he would have considered it. We don't know but I'm saying it would have been nice to see Dubas be more aggressive and move up and get a bigger impact prospect especially one that fits a need like big, top pairing, RHD.

Like Babcock said, half the battle is development so maybe Edmonton ruins him but I doubt that he never makes the NHL. Both Bouchard and Dobson are going to be good players unless the teams they play for completely (frank) up and drop the ball hard. |
