Slightly younger and he's shown more consistency in production throughout his career.

Instant upgrade at forward that allows for trade flexibility to acquire a better, younger defenseman than Carlson.

Makes players around him better. Matt Moulson, Kyle Okposo as well as their children and grand children should have a shrine to JT in their homes.

clarification:

Matthews wants close to McDavid money, but Leafs shouldn't pay him more than 10mln/8y in my view.
If Tavares joins Leafs, there shouldn't be a big different between both players - if one gets 11 and the other 8, that's setting a 'hierarchy' up front. Shoudl be clear that both players are the #1C (even moreso than the Crosby-Malkin situation).

So ideally, you'd get Matthews at 10mln and Tavares at 10mln.
Marner at 8-8.5.
Nylander at 6.75.
All long term contracts (5y+).
