Not true, he was under contract, it was built into his original GM contract.

Employment law is tricky (I've taken a few courses) - automatic transitions into lessor roles cannot be enforced. There is no way in hell Leafs could have forced Lou to remain under Leaf control until after the draft. In all liklihood there were conversations with NYI well before the announcement.

I can see into the future. 5 days from now:

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
41s
Sweeney indicates that he expects a motivated David Krejci and David Backes to be back in Boston next year

I'd take a 75 point Kopitar Selke winner for 10 million a year.

I think he's gonna continue to crush it until he's Jumbo's age.

- TheMussel

Maybe he will, he's a good player. I like Bergeron at $6.875 mil a year much better.

The Leafs had to give permission to talk to Lou, so that clearly leads to he was under contract still.

Bergeron signed that two years before Kopitar did.

I think it was a 3 year option, Lou opted out.

It wasnt an option based on what Shanahan said on his interviews from what I recall, they let him go.

Because Bergeron had Pastrnak and the best defensive winger in the game Marchand beside him while Kopitar played with a rookie and the corpse of Dustin Brown.
- AdamFrench

That corpse (who is also overpaid) scored 63 points this year - his best ever, after being pretty lousy for five years.

The Leafs really shouldnt have let Lou takeover before the draft.

Exactly. A big error on their part

Didn’t jt like weight?

I don’t see how this really changes anything. He could have signed earlier in the year when weight was still coach, but he didn’t. I think he tests free agency.

As I mentioned - not worth the paper it was written on. Could not be enforced - under any circumstance. Permission was a formality, and a sign of class on the part of both Lou and Shanny.

I’m an optimist. I say it’s 50/50 leafs or isles imo.

Ya, I’m not 100% ,,,can’t really find anything with Dr. Google. But once he was let go from the GM position pretty hard to not let him go.

You'd probably damage your reputation a bit as an employer. Especially with someone as esteemed as Lou.

Don't need google, if you have a contract for three years at GM and the contract includes a further 3 years as fart the messenger boy, there is not a court in Canada that would side with the employer to force the employee to stay, and unless he signed a non-compete clause (which is unknown) the employee is released from his fiduciary duty upon resignation. There is a basic principle of fairness applied.

I like your view. I think the chances are greater he stays with the Isles, but if not Toronto and San Jose are both possible.

Meh. Draft and develop. That way you get control of your own star players and you're not hoping that they come available through Free Agency (which they rarely do).

Keep drafting and developing. Rinse and repeat. We're off to a great start
