I've pitched the same idea before. I like the idea of bringing in a veteran to pair with him, Bieksa stuck out to me as a UFA. For whatever reason, the vets on this team are all quiet, mild mannered guys. I wouldn't mind seeing that shook up.

Well, it was sort of a racist policy. They wanted more black officers, so when they did poorly on the civil service exams they extended the time period for promotions to give them another crack, to the detriment of those higher on the list, which in this case were white guys. It just wasn't initiated by the mayor, hell, maybe it was a political move to hang on to office by Masiello "see look! I'm not racist! Look at all the black lieutenants!" But neither guy, white nor black, put a stop to it when they should've. The article also doesn't mention when the policy was presumably stopped.

Edit: The lists were allowed to expire, not extended, but the end result was the same. To give them more time to do better on the exam.

It's a distinction without a difference. The end result was the same. They were unfairly punished because they weren't the right color. If it was the other way around there would be pitchforks and torches at city hall.

It’s not the best policy,
but these types of affirmative action exist to try & balance out (just a little) the overwhelming number of promotions that are given to white males

The intent is to give minorities AND WOMEN a chance at overcoming the obvious & blatant bias that exists today, and has for quite a while

In this case, it was messed up

But it wasn’t done with racist intentions
And it was done with a white guy in charge,
not a black guy
