If the opportunity extends itself, you can't go wrong with either or honestly. Both of them are stellar defenders that are booked into the HOF.

Regardless, I do agree with you in that Doughty is overall better than Karlsson. However, do you really think that L.A. would trade Doughty or that he would want to leave? With Karlsson's situation, it makes sense to depart from what is clearly a dysfunctional organization, thus the more realistic option for an upgrade in our case. Not the same can be said for L.A.

Both parties are in agreement over the direction of the team and their part in it, so that's a good sign.

Doughty gives you that Weber style player in terms of offense and defense who can play in ANY situation equally. Lidstrom was like that. Karlsson can do more damage on the offense but I’d take Doughty, Hedman, or OEL, if not just for cost savings.

Just for argument sake, let’s say he refused to sign anywhere and wanted to test free agency next summer. That cuts his value significantly from some of the massive proposals we’ve seen. (Klefbom , 10, yam etc )
So we wouldn’t be paying nearly as much anyway. (Subtract at least one significant piece from the aforementioned)
