Fair enough, I'm not saying it's the best option but I'd be fine with it. It's pretty doubtful, seems like all the moves the Leafs make these days are with a distinct purpose and this would be a stop gap.

I hate the idea of signing old, slow, overpaid players, but I'd rather give the same money to Thornton for 1 year than Spezza.

Ideally, you don't get either but if they wanted to get a high priced, short term veteran, there are many better options than Spezza.

spezza only has one year left....martin, leivo and a turd seems like a fair price for him.

It's not up to Lou.

It's JT's decision.

- Atomic Wedgie

It's partially up to Lou because if Lou gives Tavares what he wants, he'll stay.

I'd rather have Thornton but the idea of him scoring 4 goals in a game gives me pause.

The only other possible short term UFA possibility could be veteran Valtteri Filppula, but his signing with the Leafs is unlikely, since he would not waive his no-trade clause to be moved from Tampa Bay to Toronto in 2017.
-MikeinButtalo

On top of that, Filppula sucks.

Mitch and willie pretty close.

Lou can't give JT a Stanley Cup.
So dumb remark

The odds of Tavares having the decision making skills of a 10 year old are slim to none.

I'm so confused;

Hockeyy Insiderr‏ @HkyInsiderr ·

Will reiterate this again, Tavares is going to sign with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1st per sources.

Which was followed up with;

Hockeyy Insiderr‏ @HkyInsiderr ·

**BREAKING NHL NEWS**:

Leafs have shifted focus to John Carlson, they are ready to offer a 7 year deal at $8.5M per. Golden Knights also in it and are willing to go to $9M per with same term.

- PatC80

As sweet as it would be sign Tavares, I think it's equally important to not sign Carlson...

Ottawa is probably still looking for a way to unburden themselves of their 1st rounder this year.

who are you really trying to convince of this?
Its not that big a deal if he stays or signs somewhere else. could be with the Leafs.. i dont understand why you are trying so hard to convince people of something.

you really have no more insight than anyone else. Its really odd

Easy. Give it to Colorado and hope to tank next year.

Honestly, if I were Dorion I'd be looking at this week:

Karlsson traded for 1st round pick this year or next, top prospect and okay player now

Hoffman traded for 1st rounder if possible with a cap dump if possible

Give Colorado the 4th overall this year
