It doesn't, the only thing that makes sense is that he's not coming to Toronto.
- bobbyisno1

Yep, UG says he wouldn't make his mind about any other team but he can make his mind up already about Toronto

He decided to stay in TB...no big deal..I guess it wasn't all about the money for Stamkos either.

yeah, but...

But certain locations will yield him more money than others and he knows it. Toronto isn't one of them unless they give him money he won't be worth and at that point, it defeats the purpose to sign him and complicate the cap situation even further.
- Unholy_Goalie

Maybe he wants to play in Toronto to be near to his family? As it was pointed out, he lives here in the off season. There's plenty of reasons why he might choose a location over a bit of salary, just like a lot of people do. As was also pointed out, he has already made $33M in his career, so it's not like he's too worried about cash.

Then again, I remember you posting not so long ago about how you hoped the Leafs did sign Tavares because it showed that they could get a player of that calibre.

Excellent, we have confirmation Steven Stamkos is John Tavares... Dude's been leading a double life since 2008.
- PatC80

Oh but two minutes ago, endorsement deals were totally why Tavares is going to sign in Toronto because Stamkos had one on the table. So in that moment, they were the same. But as soon as the truth that Stamkos didn't sign in Toronto is exposed, now Tavares is going to be different.

Cool logic. Can't wait to see #91 in blue and white.

Yup, completely different situation. The Leafs are still making early exits while Nashville and Vegas are going to the Cup Finals with plenty of cap space and a better tax rate. It is definitely different but still not in your favor.
- Unholy_Goalie

Vegas is not guaranteed to be better then the Leafs...I'm not even sure if they have 10 guys signed for next year?

I'd rather spend our cap on Erik Karlsson anyways...hopefully we sneak him in and not JT.

I see that you've just disproved my theory that Stamkos is Tavares...

Stamkos didn't care about money, but Tavares does. Also, Stamkos took time to make his choice, and Tavares has already decided he'll go anywhere but Toronto.

Well played Garnie, well played...

He already is in my opinion. Unless there's a legal reason for him not to, I don't know why Hoffman isn't gone yet.

He doesn't have to play for Toronto to be close to his family. He can live in Toronto in the offseason if he REALLY wanted that so badly. What is he 10 years old that he needs to be so close to his family all year round? Can't be without that home cooked Bacalhau for more than a few months?

The fact that you people constantly believe that players aren't interested in maxing out their career earnings is so incredibly naive. You know how much of that 33 million actually went into his pocket? I'd say half of it, at best.

There's no (frank)ing doubt I hope they sign him but hoping they sign him and actually having the evidence (real evidence, not half baked, blue and white dreamed evidence) to believe they have a good chance are two different things.

No, only you thought that was 'totally why.' It's icing on the cake, which for Tavares is a very big cake.

No he can't. Nobody is going to give him more than McDavid. He's very good but he's not THAT good.

The max contract is 16 million dollars (20% of 80 million). Nobody is giving him that.

- Unholy_Goalie

i have no doubt there are teams that would pay him more than Mcdavid

Nashville got bounced in the second round...what a big run they had Your points are so solid. Two years ago they made it to the final as an 8th seed.

It's official. I'm caught in a UG's web... That dude can spin things so fast;

Let's see if I can free myself.... Just because the sales pitch didn't work on Stamkos, doesn't mean it is guaranteed not to work on Tavares(assuming, he isn't signed before June 25th and the Leafs do get to talk to him)

sens will find a way to (frank) up things even more. i say 1-3 of the following happen.

1) stone is offer sheeted july 1
2) hoff is traded the day before camp starts for a poop return. e.g. hanzal, nichuskin and a 2nd
3) karlsson refuses to show up to camp. traded after the season starts.

If you mean a Randy Lee and Monika Caryk plea deals, id say very likely

Colleague of mine at work went to high school with Caryk. He's not even a hockey fan but heard the story and asked me if I had read about it.

Says she was absolutely bat poop crazy in high school. Apparently she has not changed.

No chance he gets more than McDavid. And if a team does give him more than McDavid, they're stupid.

You know what's half baked is pretending your guesses are better then anyone elses....there are players who go to teams for less money it's not a big stretch...most of these guys are just happy to be playing hockey for a living instead of being paid $2/hr by EK to troll his own teams thread.

Went to the Cup Finals the year before and their team is stacked, top to bottom. They're way better than the Leafs and in the prime of their contending years, especially if they add Tavares. It's not even close.

Half of that $33M is $16.5M - in US dollars. I - just like everyone else here - could live very comfortably on that.

Nobody gives a (frank) about living comfortably when they have options to live lavishly. You think these NHL millionaires in their 20s give a (frank) about living comfortably in a two bedroom bungalow near a park and an elementary school?

He's signing with the Islanders.

It's just that he's waiting for the very last possible moment to tell them so he can totally (frank) up their plans for next season.
