Hextall has been an idiot for the last 93 years

Hextall hasn't traded multiple first round picks for veteran quick-fixes.

What a horrible GM. Rack him!

Some possible options at 3C for 18-19:

I think, if they had their choice, Boston would rather re-sign Riley Nash and move David Backes. Backes is 34 and in 57 games last season, he put up 14 goals and 33 points and is a big guy who brings a physical element and can play a shutdown role and kill penalties. The big drawback of course, is 3 more years at a cap hit of 6 million. Backes can also play wing if needed so you're not locked into him at center for the duration of his deal. Boston would have to retain money for me to have any interest, but here is a deal that could benefit both teams:

To Philly: Backes, with 40% retention, aav would now be 3.6 million and Boston's 4th round pick (#119)

To Boston: The Flyers 2nd round pick (#50) and a 7th round pick in 2018

Another possibility is 22 year old Sam Bennett out of Calgary. Last year Bennett put up 11 goals and 26 points in 82 games. Bennett is a hard working player with decent size and wheels who, to be honest, has underachieved in Calgary. That being said, he only turns 22 this month and may just be a late bloomer. He has one year left on his deal with a cap hit of 1.95 million. I'm not sure Calgary would be looking to move Bennett, but if they were, I'd make the following offer:

TO Philly: Sam Bennett

To Calgary: the 19th pick overall, the Flyers first pick in the 5th round, and Jordan Weal

Lastly, there are some rumors out of Nashville, that the Preds may be one of the teams interested in making a run at signing Tavares. If that is the case, the Preds are going to need to clear some salary and probably will be looking to move one of their top 9 centers. The guy I'd target is Nick Bonino who has 3 years remaining at an aav of 4.1 million. Bonino is 30, is a hard working player who is good defensively, can kill penalties, has some skill and is a decent skater. Last year, he put up a mildly disappointing 12 goals and 25 points in 71 games however, all of his production was at ES as he got no pp time. For a 3C, that would be ok, and I also think Bonino could do a little better as he may have been feeling the weight of a new deal last year.

I would make the following offer:

TO Philly: Nick Bonino
TO Nashville: The Flyers 2nd round pick (#50) and Mike Vecchione.

I'm comfortable with offers 1 and 3. Although I would pull Vecchione out and just offer the 2nd. Little bit of leverage there. I'd rather make the pick with 19 than trade for Bennett

Flyers should get Fabian Brunnstrom to help out their first line.

I actually really really like that first offer. Backes is a great lockerroom presence.

Nothing personal, but I’d like the club to focus more on speed and puck skill over locker room presence and two way ability.

Missed my team neg this AM. Always the bridesmaid never the bride.

I want to see them try Laughton as the 3c. He was one of the better players on the ice during the playoffs, and maybe he is ready to take a bigger bite. See if he can play better with Simmonds on his wing instead of Dale (frank)ing Weise.

Or is anyone interested in going after Riley Nash in FA?

Not really man. Dude is 29 and kind of just “broke out”? Seems like a player Detroit would chase and give a long deal to. Fill it internally. Vech or Laughton.

I like Laughton on the 3rd line, but I really think his skill set would be better on the wing. Be nice if they could find a good playmaking center with decent wheels to put between him and Simmonds.

Stastny would be interesting there. Go down the middle with Couturier, Patrick and Stastny.

Having one player in the lineup that is not a speedster doesn't take away any focus on speed. Couturier is not a fast skater.

He would be great. For me it would depend on cap and term. I doubt he would take a 1 year deal as has been suggested.

Carchidi seems to think its possible.

Coming off a contract making 7million. Maybe 2-3 years at something like 5 to 5.5 million. Not sure you'll get him at much less.

Yup, plus he can still score, and at that number his cap hit is worth it. You figure in 2 years, the cap will have gone up by basically his cap hit. So its almost like hes not taking up any cap space!!!

Yes, please.

Laughton should be given the first look, followed by Vecchione.

Some of that point total is from when he replaced Bergeron. There are plenty of guys who would receive a boost from playing with linemates like that. >20% of his points are from that line.

Funny thing is that he also spent a majority of the year on a line with Backes

what has laughton done to earn more ice time? if he wasnt a 1st rd pick he probably would have been gone already
- rinaldo

More great player evaluation from the guy who brought us "Shutdown Seanie".

Laughton was the 2nd best possession center on the team. When Filppula and early season Patrick were getting caved in like a paper cup, Laughton was not. He also produced 5 on 5 points at a very solid clip given his usage, and was one of the better PKers.

Only way I go after Backes is if Simmonds is traded. Then he can fill the A spot for a few years before we sew it onto Provorov or Patrick's sweater. Thinking Provorov may get AMAC's A...

thats right. shutdown seanie had a great year. about time after how many? lets see him do it again. Bet you my account vs. yours he doesn't put up those numbers again.

laughton didn't earn more time. one of the better pk guys? wow thats great their pk sucked so that's like the tallest midget syndrome. If they had any faith in laughton to be that 3rd center they wouldnt be looking so hard for one. Laughton is dime a dozen player.
