"You always feel like you can take a little bit more of a risk, but a lot of times risk maybe means bad character or poor work ethic, all the things that we don’t really want. We want the best player, but we also want the best player that can come close to hitting their ceiling. The safe pick word, I don’t like that word. We need to project, that’s what we all get paid to do; to project how good a guy is going to be. A safe pick to me, I don’t like that word. What’s he going to be, where is he going fit in and where he’s going to fit in the National Hockey League. We need to know that. But in terms of having two picks, I know some organizations look, well you have two first round picks, you can take a swing on a high upside guy. We’re going to know more on that high upside guy. If we’re going to take a swing, it’s going to be a pretty good swing. It’s not going to be, this guy could be a first line player, but he’s got a 20 percent chance of being this, no we’re not going there."

I like both but Tkachuk is a LW/C who shoots left, the left side is a considerable weakness and I feel like Tkachuk perhaps a better chance to play center if needed there.

At least that's my thoughts, love to have either!!!

Hextall with a generic statement about poor character players...this could be applied to a kid like Merkley I guess, but that's not who he's referring to. Just a general statement.

"Well, I believe to project the player, you have to know a lot about that player. You have to know some background, upbringing and character, there’s a lot of ways you can get it. Our guys are out there digging and trying to find out everything they can about their guy. Because in the end the ability is one thing. The ability is here, the person is going to allow the ability to reach the peak. If you have great ability but character is not great, you’re not going to reach your ceiling, I don’t care who you are, you’re not going to reach it. If you have a lot of ability and really good character, you want to be the best you can be, then, chances are you’re going to reach your ceiling. They need to find out. You should see a lot of it on the ice. You can do a lot of research too in terms of the character of the human being."

Tkachuk is the "safe" bet to be a NHL'er, but you have to question his true offensive upside as a top 7 pick. Especially as one of the "older" players in this draft.

Flyers almost always draft a guy who's at least 6 feet tall and a "good character" with their first round pick. Konecney was the only undersized guy they've drafted recently and he's pretty feisty.

We might be weak on the left side, but I wouldn't touch Tkachuk with a ten foot pole at 7. We have Dahlen and Gadjovich in the system, we desperately need more defense, if Hughes and Dobson are gone by us, like DCT I'd hope we'd trade down to try and get Kotkaniemi plus an extra pick and asset and add to our prospect pool.

I feel either player can help us as there is a need for both. When I picture them each in our roster I am more excited by wahlstrom/EP/boeser playing together

I'd prefer a trade down, but otherwise would want Wahlstrom or Kotkaniemi

Yes...you end up in a mediocre state. Like the DOC just said on my expectations of how the draft falls.

Yes I'd agree with that, it was more what I think will happen than what I want to happen but I kinda crossed into both scenarios there saying I like Tkachuk. I just think Benning might feel that way about him? Who knows?

For me, I'll always build through the middle of the ice, that's my M.O. and how I'd do business in a situation like this at #7. Like DOC said, I'd probably try and trade down a couple spots and take Kotkaniemi.

I think he's listed at all three positions, one of those rare ones.

i don't think there's much chance Wahlstrom plays anything other than RW and Tkachuck LW

Tk would be so hard to pass on, but I think if it's going to be anyone of the projected top 10 it would be him and Bouch for me

the more time goes by the more kotk and kravtsov rise and the more zadina falls (but i'd almost 100% pick him at 7 if he's there)

that tanev/virtanen/tryamkin for ror rumour has really stuck with me
