I’m not sure I’d go after any FA Dmen. You already have Provy, Ghost, AMac, Sanheim, Gudas and Hagg healthy and, except for Hagg who should be signed soon, under contract for next year. You also have Myers who may be ready too and Morin should be back in the picture before the end of next season. Maybe you sign a 6/7 guy for depth but that’s all I’d do unless a Dman is traded at the draft. - BiggE
i think with Morin out they need to find a middle pair D man. I know Sanheim and Hagg will get better but if the Flyers dont upgrade, I don't think the team will be any better than last year. Watching the Phantoms, specifically when they were eliminated, both Myers and Sanheim still have a ways to go.
When it is crunch time you really have AMAC and Provy that you cant trust. I hope Sanheim has a breakout year, I hope Hagg does and who knows maybe Gudas has a resurgence. Even if Gudas does, I still think the Flyers D will be lower half of the league.
they need a vet presence with some size and edge |

I don't ever, ever want to read another post that states that we should let Simmonds go because Morin can handle the enforcer role... |

I think we're gonna be the same next season regardless of what Hextall does. In fact we might be weaker. I agree with the majority that it isn't the right time for a splash but losing Simmonds could hurt. I don't like our goaltending and outside of Provorov, I don't like our defense. |

I am hoping Hakstol learned from last season not to ride Elliott for too many games i n a row. He'd have been fine if he was only scheduled for 50-55 games The problem came when Neuvy went full glass that Hakstol rode Elliott to death instead of giving Lyon games to let Elliot keep his pace. I really hope we go into the year with Elliott/Lyon and find a way to move Neuvy.
On the D side I'm not going out and looking for a Dman with our current contracted D (I include Hagg as he's an RFA and will get an offer)
9-8
53-6
47-Myers
3 as the 7th (muscle if you want it).
Not saying they play those sides just how I'd like them to start. |

i think our defense will be better. I don't think people sometimes consider what its like to have experience. Hagg, Sanheim both have a year of NHL play under their belt. Not only do they have a better idea of what to expect, they also have a better idea of how to prepare both mentally and physically outside of what the team does in this regard.
I expect them both to improve. Both Ghost and Provorov played at Norris level last season. AMac will be AMac, which to me is a solid vet who will be a good partner on the 2nd or (preferably) 3rd pair. Ghost is now a veteran. Provorov has been a veteran from the time he was in juniors.
So maybe they come back with Gudas or trade him and another kid wins a job. Either way, I see improvement coming.
As for the goalies, they are just holding on for dear life.

It will also be nice to have a full healthy season of Patrick after his first year. |

Good, because if we want a big defender who plays with an edge, he's probably the only one who can reasonably be acquired. |

Well the Flyers need a big tough defenseman. Sanheim is big but doesn't exactly instill fear. Morin is on the mend until the winter solstice of 2019 and Myers will be a bust. LOL |

I never thought of Myers as a bruiser, more a big man who uses his body for positioning more than anything.
I'd love to get a guy like Zadorov, just not sure of the cost. But of the players like him, he probably gives the best return for what it would take to get him. |

He's not particularly physical, but how much do you give up for Dougie Hamilton? He's a guy I'd look at trading Simmonds + for. The Flames also don't have a pick in the first 3 rounds this year. |

We need to make sure he's protected, so we should never play him against any team that has a competent defense.
In other words, he's only allowed to play against the Browns. |

You may be selling Meyers a tad short here...he has edge and is actually extremely dedicated to his fitness and strength programs.
He may not be someone likely to drop the gloves like Zadorov would but he can be very aggressive on the physicality side. |

I just don't see him as an imposingly physical guy. I can see him more along the lines of 2010 SCF Coburn who used his size with authority, but not they type that players fear as they approach the blueline. |

so do you go after Jack Johnson, Dehann or a cheaper option like Cole? - wcorvette
JJ is redundant on a team that already has than MacDonald and Hagg in the top 4. Adding him would give the Flyers three dmen in the top 20 of the NHL.

Agreed. I think priority 1 is signing a 3C who can kill penalties and chip in a few goals. Someone like Riley Nash. - MBFlyerfan
If they go FA to fill the 3C spot, Nash would be my choice. However, I’d rather fill the spot via a trade if possible. No matter who you sign in FA, you’ll likely end up signing someone for too much $$ and/or too many years. |

Ghost had such an incredible year as a top pairing dman and the best PP quarterback in the league, that if Hextall had bridged him he'd be looking at getting $8m+ AAV on his next contract. |
