He owes it too himself to check out all possibilities. I still think Lou keeps him an islander in the end.

Makes sense. His agent probably told him to go, see what ridiculously huge offer they make , then use it in negotiatioms with teams he actually wants to sign with.

Alternately (or both), go and see what the isles can get for your rights before July 1st then resign with an Isles team with another asset or two...

Good place to stop off before heading South to San Jose.

Didn't Voynov get charged and deported for domestic violence?

Don't foreign nationals with felony charges have trouble with admissibility?

- leafsfann

No. He plead no contest to a misdameanor charge and spent a month in jail. Then he left the country voluntarily after it appeared that he was going to be deported, a discovery that his legal team was very upset about (he pleaded to a misdameanor to avoid a felony conviction to avoid deportation).

Presumably the fact that he isn't a felon is what is prompting discussion of his return. If there wasn't a good chance that the immigration issue could be resolved, we likely wouldn't be hearing all the news we have been hearing.

Someone explain to me how the Kings wouldn't still retain his rights since the league kicked him out?

The league didn't kick him out. He was indefinitely suspended (with pay) during his legal proceedings, and he voluntarily left the country and abandoned his contract when it appeared that ICE was going to deport him after he got out of jail.

After he left, the Kings suspended him for contract abandonment, and because he was on a RFA contract, the Kings will retain his rights should he return, similar to what happened with Vladimir Sobotka when he left St. Louis to return to the KHL.

If this weren't the rule, Russian players would just return to Russia in their early 20s until they reached their UFA age, then return to sign with whatever team they wanted.

His rights are retained by the Kings. So a team would have to trade for his rights.

Kind of. Technically Voynov terminated the contract by returning to Russia. The Kings suspended him and terminated the contract because he didn't show up to training camp, not because of the domestic violence incident.

Wether reports about visiting Van are true or not, I do believe he’s done with Isles. Fans need to realize that as soon as Lou fired Snow and Weight, the rebuild started. Nobody else was let go, and focus has turned to draft. Look for a new young coach, possibly Marlies Keefe. People who think Lou is going to sign FAs to keep Tavares happy are dillusional. Lou will start from scratch, and his son will be new GM

love how South Surrey/Wite Rock tries so hard not to associate themselves with the rest of Surrey.
