SPECTOR’S NOTE: Anything’s possible, of course, but I share Matheson’s doubts about the Oilers finding a trade partner to take on those remaining five years of Lucic’s contract. There was some speculation of a Lucic for Andrew Shaw swap with Montreal, but I think the Oilers would have to absorb part of Lucic’s cap hit to make it palatable for the Canadiens. Even then, the remaining years of his contract could be a deal breaker.

This year, and potentially next year's, free agent class should really make the Habs think about where they are spending their cap dollars. If the can't (and probably won't) get JT then do they blow their cap space on overpaying someone like Stastny or go the route of taking on bad contracts for prospects or picks?
Or do they do something more conservative, given they are not going to win anything much next year, by keeping their cap space and see what next year's free agency might bring? |

I still say Alzner makes more sense, for both sides but the 10th has to be involved, only way the Habs should consider any trade for Lucic is if Edmonton coughs up that pick |

I think Montreal should draft Brady Tkachuk, even if Filip Zadina might be better '' on paper''. Filip Zadina would be a better pick for most of the team, but to play in Montreal you MUST be able to play under pressure. Montreal has few player with a lot of talent.. but when darker days come, they hide behind people with character like Brendan Gallagher.
Every year, there is player like Zadina available.. but the possibility to draft a high potential player in the style of Tkachuk is less common.
I know that the Montreal Canadiens fans will cry like babies if the team selects Tkachuk, but they still don't understand that the reason why Habs can't afford to draft player like Zadina, it is because of the attitudes of the fans and media's toward the player. |

Habs will draft Son-of-Niemi, either at 3 (or 5th / 6th in a trade with Arizona or Detroit, depending on who is available at #3). |

Go take a look at Lucic 's deal. It would not be a short term thing.
I don't mind mtl taking a bad contract for picks or prospects but not really for more than one year or two.
Bergevin might still sign Pacioretty and anyway. nobody wants to be in cap hell long term. |

And to say that Zadina would perform a certain way under the Montreal spotlight because he's a skilled player is what? |

Filip Zadina wouldn't perform a certain way under the montreal spotlight because he's a skilled player. It might not be the case. My point is : Brady Tkachuk is a player with character, with a lot of potentiel and leadership, 100% sure. The goal is to build a team, not a " line ". In your team, you need player like Tkachuk, and its rare to find that kind of player with the talent of Tkachuk that are able to do his kind of job. |

You can get character and leadership anywhere in the 2nd round of the draft, at 3 you select the top end skill especially on a team that so desperately needs it... We can go on until draft day about who they should pick and why, doesn't mean much, it's just an opinion and if it was me, id take Zadina or trade the pick |

Was not talking about Lucic specifically, just wondering it it is better to sit with lots of free cap space than just spend it for the sake of spending it, rather than saving it for when it could be more useful later.
The Habs are not going to be contenders next year, so why screw themselves up cap-wise?

For sure.....getting a centre in UFA for the sake of FINALLY getting a centre will not help this poop storm MB has created. The centre has to be either young or drafted to be our guy from the get-go.
Not a UFA just to appease the masses and the angry mob circling around this reactionary, unqualified, stubborn and useless management group. |

I just fear something stupid like over payment for Stastny (who I don't mind, really as a #2, but it will be 7 years), or Bozak or paying too much in a trade for RoR. |

Same here. I'm afraid of MB doing something selfish to save face and his job instead of the long-term health and prosperity of the team/organization.
Although he's being enabled by Richy Rich.....so who knows? You can never believe these guys.....
Although they did have a ground-breaking discovery halfway through May of 2018 that the NHL is fast is built around speed, transition and mobility.
So they probably think that they're ahead of the curve on this one and will take on the Lucic contract.......... |
