It’s about time Caps been getting away with garbage all night. - walleyeb1
Yea, I just saw the first goal, why wasn't the goal waved off whe Carlson ran over MAF? So I see, get called for 1 GI and then you can run the goalie all game. (CC knows all about this, except no penalties are ever called). |

Sbisa seems to be playing well defensively. He's an FA this year, hawks should target him. |

Defenseman Adam Boqvist had dinner with just the Blackhawks, Red Wings and Senators. He said he's still 2-3 years away from the NHL. He also sounds *exactly* like Marcus Kruger. - pdx2ord
Take a pass on him,we don't need another Kruger . |

Hawks don't need another 2x cup winner that's a good defensive center and on faceoffs? |

Wes needs a puck to the face! He should never be allowed to ref another game. When someone is killed on the ice, he will be one of the refs working the game. You heard it here first. |

All the pissin and moaning about Q
Well, Gallant keeps rollin lines, no changes or adjustments. Keeps playing Theodore who has been the clown for 2g and 1 penalty for being lazy/unaware.
That's why you shuffle lines and bench people |

Why should he panic. This is the first game they looked not so good. this line-up has worked for him all season. Benching Theodore would be idiotic. Kid has been vg this playoff run. He was terrible tonight but Vegas is going to need him if they hope to win this series. |

It's not panicking, its coaching
It was clear Theodore wasn't ready. Why keep putting him in there?
The lines haven't generated anything thru 2 periods. Why not give a different look? Visiting team coach has to try something different but he let Trotz just sit back and roll along |

Nope that sounds like Panic !!,,And that what Q does . Rotating D in and out almost every night .No lines together for more then a game or two . Benching players for minor mistakes , and other play and play no matter what they do ,a PP that can't put the puck in the lake . Joel is in a power struggle with Stan and the FO ,and it's what is killing this team .. |

And Gallant just made it an easy win for Trotz.
So congrats on sleeping behind the bench, Gerrard. I mean, "not panicking " |

We fundementally disagree which is fine. Many teams make what I believe are completely illogical choices even at #1 or #2. These choices, of course skew the statistics. Nugent-Hopkins at #1 at 150lbs was a ridiculous choice. Toews NOT at #1 or #2 also ridiculous. I believe there are lots of quality players available in every draft assuming a team’s scouts have a clue. I also make no bones about the fact that I am a huge proponent of drafting players with extremely high skill and skating ability. Can’t teach skill. Issues like size are secondary. - Z3Hawk
Those weren't illogical at the time, though, and the fact that some players do better or worse than their original pick position is factored into the data for pick value. Predicting a full NHL career while a player is 17/18 is hard to do and they can only go by the information they have at the time. RNH was ranked the best NA skater and he center in the draft. Staal and Johnson were ranked higher than Toews is most reports, def ISS. With hindsight, we know some players are actually better than those picked above them (like Toews) but the info at the time didn't necessarily say that. Right now, Svechnikov is the 2nd ranked NA skater but in 5-6 years, we might be talking about how it was silly that Zadina or Tkachuk weren't taken over him.
Also, looking back, RNH was 6'0" and like 165 when he was drafted. Smaller but not so tiny - bigger than Kane iirc. I'm pretty sure Kailer Yamamoto is the lightest player to be drafted in the 1st round at 155 - he was def the shortest cause I remember the TSN commentary.
Just for reference, here is a graph of historical draft pick value (weighted for more recent drafts) that shows what I meant when I said value slopes dramatically after a point in the 1st round and eventually plateaus:
And then here is the 1st round development curve which I just think is interesting:
Again, just because there is a historical draft value doesn't mean a current pick will end up being exactly that value - there are always gems and busts throughout the draft. |

Laz meant his speaking voice and accent sounds like Kruger because they are both Swedish, not that he is stylistically like Kruger. I mean, Boqvist is a defensemen after all - it'd be hard to be like Kruger since they don't play the same position.
Also, the Hawks could actually use another Kruger (pre-wrist injury). He was one of the best shutdown centers in the league for a few years, taking on high quality of comp with league leading DZ shares (by a large margin), great in transition and flipping the ice to allow offensive players easier zone starts. Between 2013-2015, the single highest shift change (also by a large margin) was Kruger to Kane, and they had the highest goal rate after such a switch in at least 2013 and 2014 (I can't remember 2015 off the top of my head). Not to mention how good he was on the PK. Just because he tapered off and was given a contract above his worth doesn't negate how good he was at his role for a while there.
So yeah, the Hawks could definitely use a guy like that considering how weak the forward core was defensively last season. If not another Kruger type, then a more basic checking line center that can at least take on opposing 2nd/3rd lines - none of what Wingels-Bouma-Hayden did this past year getting only other 4ths, which helps not at all. |

I actually mentioned RNH on purpose because I simply knew you’d then tell me he was rated 1 when taken 1 - which was my point that scouts are often clueless - extremely clueless. I’m not a scout but I knew RNH at 1 was a horrible choice. I also knew you’d tell me about Toews at 3 too. Again proving my point that scouts are often clueless - extremely clueless. Again I’m not a scout but I was extremely happy with Toews at 3 for the Hawks as I knew he should’ve gone 1. DeBrincat at 39. I was absolutely wildly happy. Actually debated John Jaekel on here telling him repeatedly that I didn’t care what the scouts said and I didn’t care that he’d fallen to 39, I simply knew that he would not only make the Hawks but would have a great first season. Chalk one up for Z3. Knott at 54 - knew he’d be slow to develop if he developed at all.
The very best scouts can truly analyze hockey talent because they are highly intelligent people who do not simply rely upon what other people write or obvious statistics - they are best because of their independent thought.

And either Tuch or Haula out of the lineup..or both next game - PatShart

As said before ,coach Q has not listen to anyone since the big contract inflated his ego . And since he is in a war with Stan ,Scotty is the last guy he is listening to .. Washington is a very strong club compared to Vegas . I think Gerard has got a lot more out of his club then Anyone thought possibale.. |

Can't teach size either, or more importantly hunger and will. Thought the last paragraph of this piece says much. MN Wild's biggest draft busts: https://thehockeywriters....wild-biggest-draft-busts/
Remember when the Hawk mantra was draft high IQ players in the Detroilet Red Wing mold? ...... I'd hope my team would draft the best hockey player available in that slot, period. Hire the best scouts and evaluators and trust them. Way too easy to outsmart yourself as a GM. Collect good hockey players and trade them for need when that time comes but draft day draft the best player in that slot regardless of size or position.
Scouts are eyes on guys, upper management guys are both eyes on and fancy stat guys. Room for both IMO just that balance is needed.
