This might come as a surprise but Staple is not the only guy who writes for the Athletic. Some good content on there from lots of different people on all sports not just hockey.

I hear you i don't watch any other sport so it does me no good. So I guess you're not going to paste his QA then?

Here you go you cheap facks

Is the kovalchuk interest legit or just speculation due to LL being hired?

@Chris S. It's legit, Chris. There's a couple factors at work there: 1) Lou and Kovalchuk do have a good relationship; 2) Kovalchuk wants to be in the NY area and 3) It sounds like the Rangers aren't that interested. So I think it's legit.

how many "impact" players, if at all, do you see the isles adding this offseason?
Arthur S.
STAFF

@dan B. Obviously there's one huge impact player the Isles want to retain, but as far as from outside, I'd say 3-4. You can bet Lou will want to move quickly on players currently on the roster he'd like to get rid of and there's a goaltender, a defenseman (or two) and a forward (or two) out there to bring in. I think there will be a significant amount of wheeling and dealing at or around the draft. Buckle in!

@Rich Z. Hard to say, Rich. Snow may stay on as GM and be content with the new role and Lou may be happy to have him there. No one really knows. I would guess we'll see some additions to the front office -- scouts most likely -- and perhaps they head into the season with the same coaching staff but on a much shorter leash.

@Rob I. I don't think NSH is ready to move on from Rinne just yet. Lou can be persuasive but it'd take a lot more than a couple picks to make that happen. Aim a bit lower in goal.

@Matt B. My best guess -- and, with Lou in charge, this is genuinely a guess -- is that Doug and the coaches are back but they better start strong. Lou fires coaches when his teams are playing well, so if the Isles struggle out of the gate, watch out.

What are the chances the Islanders stay where they are in the first round of the Draft and pick at 11 and 12? (As opposed to trading one or both of those picks for help now, or trading up for an elite prospect?)
Arthur S.
STAFF

@Brian F. I don't see them trading up. I think they'll use one and trade one, but I'd bet on them trading both more than I'd bet on them moving up into the top 7 or so.

Hi Art, I’ll get this one out of the way for you.

What do you think NYI’s goaltending situation will look like next season?
Arthur S.
STAFF

@Ryan M. Of the available guys (and ones that don't seem available yet), I'd say Jimmy Howard jumps out most. The Wings aren't going anywhere, Howard has a year left at a decent salary ($4.25-million, with a $5.3-million cap hit) and he could be a short-term solution as a starter. I'd also investigate which of Colorado's goaltenders, Semyon Varlamov or Jonathan Bernier, is available -- Bernier is a UFA and Varlamov has one year left.

Thomas Greiss may get a chance to be the backup and Linus Soderstrom will be waiting in the wings, along with possibly Christopher Gibson, who is a UFA.

@Jenn S. I'd think either a trade or word that Kovalchuk has agreed to a deal (which can't be officially announced until July 1) will be first in the hopper. It's coming, Jenn. Trust me.
Marc S.

Kovalchuk can score.....but doesn't backcheck and has no speed......what role could he possibly have on this flawed roster?
Chris D.
3h ago
I have a hard time thinking Lou tries to sign a guy who screwed him over like Kovy did, but that’s just me.
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Marc S. I would think if Tavares is back that Kovalchuk would be Barzal's LW to start the season and on PP1 in place of Bailey. He's also been playing on the bigger surface in Russia for five years. He'll be fast enough.
Ryan G.
3h ago
Heard Larry Brooks on a pod this morning implying Lou convinced JT to stay and that Lou would have first crack and Kovalchuk...I am paraphrasing, but any thoughts?

@Brian E. Wouldn't surprise me to see him included in a trade. LL wants to win now and transform the roster, so you can't do that without unloading a few prospects. Add in the headache factor and I could see JHS on the move.

Art,

Lou went and made a move for Cory Schneider when he was with NJD. He went out and got Freddie Andersen with TML. Any idea who could be available that he could pursue for NYI? Teams don’t just give up their #1 goalie once established. Thanks for reading!

@Mike S. Mentioned Jimmy Howard and Semyon Varlamov above... On D, Justin Faulk is out there but would cost a ton. Could see the Isles going for Jack Johnson in free agency as well.

2h ago
@Arthur S. By "a ton" do you think the conversation could start at a first rounder, Josh The Younger and one of our LHD prospects like VandeSompel, Wotherspoon, or dare I say give them a matching set of Sebastian Aho's.
You know, the last thing you need is two Aho's.
Gerard T.
3h ago
If snow is running the draft, do you see them trading one of their twi firsts for an #1 goalie or dman and then using the two 2's to get back into the first round around 25-30? We know Garth likes targeting guys at the end of the first round.
Arthur S.

Is there a legitimate shot the Isles go after Mark Hunter on July 15 for the GM position? How about getting a guy like Trotz or Tippett to coach? Lou is probably all in and Isles need to entice JT to stay.

@John P. Nelson was probably on the block before Lou, so safe to say he's still there... I could see Lee being moved if there were a big piece coming back but if JT is more likely to return now, I doubt Lee is moved.
John P.

@Arthur S. Thanks for the reply. I see you have a lot of speculation around some big $$$ coming in. They'd have to be temporary or some of these pending UFA contracts will have to be moved, or allowed to walk.

3h ago
If Kessel is on the block due to friction with Sullivan, any chance the Isles make a run? Could Eberle or Lee make sense for the Pens (assuming either could be extended)?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Scott D. Not sure I'd make a Lee-for-Kessel move, Scott. Kessel thrives in a deep lineup and a place he can be an unassuming locker-room presence. Isles are certainly low on media pressure, but deep lineup? Eh.
Mike S.
3h ago
What is the likelihood of Mark Hunter joining Lou? If that occurs, what will Garth be doing for the org , assuming he doesn’t resign?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Mike S. Snow won't be resigning -- millions of reasons not to. Unless Lou wants to fire Snow, I can't see Hunter coming in to be a third wheel. Could happen, but that's a couple months away.
Jonathan W.
3h ago
1) there are rumblings that Garth was blindsided by all of this. What do you think? Do you think we'll ever get his side of the story? I can imagine there's lots of things that go on behind closed doors that we'll never know. Such as aggressive trades he actually tried to land, or UFAs he tried to secure.

2) %/odds that JT re-signs?

3) What changes do you think we will see to the organization now that Lou is in charge? Staff, current roster? How soon do you think we will see it?

THANKS ART!
Arthur S.

@Jonathan W. 1) I mentioned it in my initial story and Larry Brooks had it as well that the ultimate decision to bring Lou on was done without consulting Snow or Weight; they both had no idea Lou met with Tavares the week before either. And no, I don't think Snow will ever say what went down. I'll keep trying to find out though.

2) I'd say 55% right now. It's rising.

3) Soon on roster changes. Not sure about staff changes.

Could you see the islanders trading one of the firsts for a legit starting goalie like Lou did for the devils (Schneider for #9) if so which starters could be available for that price?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Nicholas B. As I said above, hard to know of anyone as solid as Schneider (or Andersen) available now. Might have to be a more short-term fix in goal, but that could lower the price as well and allow Lou to maneuver for other help.

If the Isles do get Kovalchuk, is it a fair assumption that another top 6 winger (Eberle probably) will be used as trade bait for one of the Isles more pressing concerns (D and/or Goalie)
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Eric W. It's possible, but as I said above, if JT stays, Lee likely isn't going anywhere. Eberle would be tough to give up too since that would leave them painfully thin on the right side.
Ross G.
3h ago
Given Lou's love of bringing back former players, which former players of his do you think he will target? Could you see a deal for Kinkaid or Schneider?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Ross G. Schneider will be coming off a major surgery so that's a big risk. And the Devils aren't trading Kinkaid for that same reason.
Ross G.

What does Lou do with Ho-Sang? If he stays, does he have to change his number?

@Aaron L. I could see him being moved. And yes, if he stays, he ain't wearing 66. That's a lock.
Larry C.
2h ago
@Arthur S. I know about all of Lou's quirks but that seems kind of silly. Why would he make him change his number for a player that has nothing to do with Isles? I hope he doesn't get traded. He gets crazy at times but can really open games with puck moving and passes that nobody else makes. I can see him developing into an impact player. I think his leash was way too short... we saw plenty of turnovers from other players that were contributing zero offense.
Bobby T.
3h ago
In your opinion how do you see the Garth Snow saga concluding? And does Lou plan to speak to the media about the organization evaluation at any point? Changes.. no changes?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Bobby T. Lou may make changes but I doubt he'll explain them in much detail. Not his style. I could see Snow staying on as GM for this year and then moving on, either to another role in the org (business operations) or being let go with a large buyout. Or he could stay as GM until his contract is up in 4 or 5 years.
Frank B.
3h ago
Do you believe there will be changes to the way Islanders handle player development and scouting?

What do you think the home games at Barclays will be like next couple of years? Will all the LI fans just go the Coliseum games and ignore the Bark?
Arthur S.
STAFF

@Chris S. I've definitely wondered that and also wondered if the number of Coliseum games would be gradually increased. It makes so little sense for a lot of fans to head to Barclays unless they're city folks or they love the place, so I'm as curious as anyone to see how that unfolds.

As a reporter that covers the Islanders (among other things), have you spoken to LL in depth yet? If so, what has he told you? Will covering the team be harder or easier now?
Arthur S.
STAFF

@Mark N. Covering a team is never "easy" -- you find stuff out sometimes and other times you don't, that's how it is with every team. I haven't spoken to Lou but when I have in the past, he's great company -- good story teller, engaging. What he gives you on the record is always cordial but reveals very little -- much the way Snow has been.
Frank B.
3h ago
In your opinion, which contracts would the Isles like to unload?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Frank B. Ladd's, I'm sure, but I can't see that happening. Possibly Clutterbuck, but Lou's perspective on those bottom-six guys could be very different than the fans' perception of them.
Dylan D.
3h ago
Is it possible that Lou's meeting with Tavares was to see how possible it was that he would resign? If Tavares said that he wasn't going to resign with the Islanders do you see Lou taking the job?
Arthur S.
STAFF

@Dylan D. Lou was taking this job no matter what because it's a chance to run a team fully, something he didn't do in Toronto. I'm sure his conversation with Tavares was about how Lou will transform the operation, not a feeling-out to see if there's a fit. Lou was coming in no matter what.

Obviously priority is JT but as far as other pending UFAs on the roster, do you get the sense they want to move on from De Haan completely? Or would they prefer to hold onto him and bring in one other defensemen as opposed to potentially two new ones?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@Blair M. As above, I think de Haan would work if there's no frontline interest in him. Too much risk for a bigger deal.
David B.
3h ago
Lee is entering the last year, coming off a 40 goal season. Could he be part of a deal for a clear need? Pending JT, would we really want $24-$25m PY in 12, 27 and 91?
Arthur S.
STAFF
3h ago
@David B. That's a big number for sure and the potential addition of Kovalchuk at 5-6m per complicates things. There's going to be some wheeling and dealing to make this all work, but I would imagine if JT stays they would try to keep Lee.

Isles need at least 1 big piece on the back end. And I think it would be best for that piece to not be an EK65 own-zone-issue type. So, is there any chance Lou really goes for it and goes after Doughty? Perhaps he sees LAK as a “been there done that” kind of thing? Otherwise, I think OEL has to be who they go after.
Arthur S.

@Desmond Z. Doughty or OEL would cost them pretty much every asset they have. Each would be a huge help, of course, but I'm not sure they're in a position where one move solves everything.
Desmond Z.
3h ago
While I agree they are a few moves away, I ask because of the context of Lou’s “not here to rebuild” comment and view. Getting a legit backender seems more possible than before. In some ways, I think what they need is someone that does/did what Boychuk did in 2014 for the room, but way more polished and skilled on ice.

@AJ S. As mentioned, Scott Stevens makes a lot of sense. Actual players -- I'd mentioned Jack Johnson as a UFA who might help. With former first round pick Samsonov coming over next year and Grubauer in the fold although a RFA and holtby having 2 years left at 6.1, any chance caps move him or has that ship likely sailed with his postseason run? Hi Art, Thanks for doing this!

1) What would be Lou's rationale for keeping Doug Weight as head coach going into next season? Several experienced coaches are available (Sutter, Tippett, and Trotz in 2 weeks), and Doug has had 120+ games as head coach in the NHL with very little success. Lou fired John MacLean 10 weeks into his first season as head coach, so I don't see why Lou necessarily would give Doug more time.

2) Any significance to the fact that Kovalchuk just moved on from longtime agent Jay Grossman and switched to Tavares's agency? Could that point to a JT/Kovalchuk package deal?
Arthur S.

@Michael L. 1) I don't think Lou is ready to clean house without getting the landscape down first.

My question: what is Lou’s objective in targeting Kovalchuck when they already have a lot of firepower upfront but are clearly lacking defensively thinking forwards (eg for the PK) and a shut down D. @Anant A. He's another high-end guy who adds a little something new to a team that doesn't add much at that level. I agree it's not exactly what they need but if they can make the cap work and it appeals to 91, then I think they're going to do that.

@Navin V. I think Beau would be a strong 3C and you need cost-effective guys in some spots. Yes, the cap situation is going to be tricky, but I would imagine that if JT signs and Kovalchuk comes in there won't be extensions for Lee and Eberle just yet. Risky, but Lou is a risk-taker.

Hey Art- what about the bottom six? We have over $12M tied up alone btwn 15, 16 and 53, which is a considerable chunk of our salary cap. Trading any of those contracts with term left is likely not an option. Knowing that JT is a UFA, Eberle and Lee are UFAs next offseason and Beau, Pulock and Barzal are owed extensions either now or possibly next offseason (oh, and we still need a goalie and a top 4 defenseman), is there a realistic way to shed some of these bad contracts to free up needed cap space?

I'd also investigate which of Colorado's goaltenders, Semyon Varlamov or Jonathan Bernier, is available -- Bernier is a UFA and Varlamov has one year left.

Thomas Greiss may get a chance to be the backup and Linus Soderstrom will be waiting in the wings, along with possibly Christopher Gibson, who is a UFA.

2) I'd say 55% right now. It's rising.

3) Soon on roster changes. Not sure about staff changes.

@Eric W. It's possible, but as I said above, if JT stays, Lee likely isn't going anywhere. Eberle would be tough to give up too since that would leave them painfully thin on the right side.

@Dylan D. Lou was taking this job no matter what because it's a chance to run a team fully, something he didn't do in Toronto. I'm sure his conversation with Tavares was about how Lou will transform the operation, not a feeling-out to see if there's a fit. Lou was coming in no matter what.

While I agree they are a few moves away, I ask because of the context of Lou’s “not here to rebuild” comment and view. Getting a legit backender seems more possible than before.

@marci C. It was his first year dealing with real adversity and a hand-picked coaching staff whose message clearly wasn't getting through by the midway point of the season, so it's still a process even for a guy who's been in the spotlight his whole adult life. Believe me, Marci, I don't love getting chirped either! Doug does a lot of self-evaluation so I'm sure he's looking at everything he did last season to try and be better.

Buckle in!

Do you see the isles being interested in Tyler Bozak? They have a hole at third line center.
Arthur S.

@Chris S. Depends on what happens prior to July 1. If Tavares returns and Kovalchuk signs, Beauvillier is almost certainly the 3C. Not much room for a UFA there.

@Scott D. Anything's possible, though I tend towards thinking that Snow isn't giving up any $ for no reason. As he told me in the Q&A we debuted with in February, he could see himself working as an athletic director at a university somewhere. Would think that's where he'd go next.

With former first round pick Samsonov coming over next year and Grubauer in the fold although a RFA and holtby having 2 years left at 6.1, any chance caps move him or has that ship likely sailed with his postseason run? My thought going into the post season was that the caps have had very few picks in the past few years and we could move some for Braden.

Hey Arthur,
1) I know Kovalchuk can’t sign until July 1, but when can a deal be “announced”? Because there was a report about him agreeing to a deal with the Rangers a few weeks back
2) Now that LL is here, clearly people around the league and you think the chances of him staying has increased, do you still think he reaches the listening period? Thanks!

The Islanders haven't had a non-interim head coach since George Bush was president. Isn't there value in for once giving a coaching staff a clean slate and fresh start with a full training camp?
Arthur S.

Hey Art, I know the isles need help on the backend but is there a way they could look into seeing if Duchene is available? Id imagine his market price has been cut in half since last summer and probably has no intentions staying in Ott. With him the isles would prob be the deepest team down the middle and fix a ton of holes on the offense. Also possible isles look to hire Lindy Ruff?

@Michael C. Cost would still be pretty high on Duchene to make him a 3C. I'd pass for now. And I'd look more at coaches Lou has a history with.

Arthur S.
STAFF
1h ago
@Michael L. 1) I don't think Lou is ready to clean house without getting the landscape down first.

2) Not really. Kovalchuk's CAA agent is JP Barry, not Pat Brisson, who is Tavares' guy. It's a big company.

Hi Art,
Thanks for doing this!
My question: what is Lou’s objective in targeting Kovalchuck when they already have a lot of firepower upfront but are clearly lacking defensively thinking forwards (eg for the PK) and a shut down D. Seems like a PR move to me (if it comes to fruition) that will lead them to cap hell without addressing the holes on the roster.
Arthur S.
STAFF
1h ago
@Anant A. He's another high-end guy who adds a little something new to a team that doesn't add much at that level. I agree it's not exactly what they need but if they can make the cap work and it appeals to 91, then I think they're going to do that.

With Barzal eligible for an extension in July 2019 how are the Islanders going to afford him, re-sign JT, sign Kovalchuk and hand out new deals to Lee & Eberle? Also do you see Beavillier being moved as a trade chip if Kovalchuk signs?
Arthur S.
STAFF
1h ago

@Anthony A. Not a lot of goalies out there for sale that scream true No. 1... As I mentioned earlier in the chat, Jimmy Howard makes sense on a lower-cost deal. Varlamov/Bernier out of Colorado. Maybe Carter Hutton in FA.
