All them played three years before being in the top pair. You should make an attempt to figure out how long each took to develop into top pair guys before just dismissing the names I've mentioned as random.

Keith 2 years AHL,2 years NHL before being in the top pair
Hedman 4 years in the NHL, 1 year KHL before top pair
Jones 3 years bottom pair Nashville
Karlsson 2 years Sweden, 2 years NHL/AHL before top pair

None of these examples moved onto the top pair before 21, most of them were older except Jones who stepped in around that time. Hanafin went straight into the NHL at 18, has done all of his developing years in the show (arguably shouldn't have).

- neem55

Jones played regularly with Weber as the left side dman at 5v5 as a rookie. That would have been some heck of a bottom pair when Weber wasn't a cripple. Jones also never was played less than anyone besides Josi and Weber who cleaned up on special teams ice.

Hedman and Karlsson were playing the most minutes on their teams as sophomores (with Hedman in 2nd on his team as a rookie). Karlsson was only a ~1 minute away from being the most played as a rookie. Hedman was getting top matchups by age 20, but no one noticed he was actually good because he wasn't getting points on the PP so they thought he was busy sucking nobs.

There are a lot of dmen you could use for examples, these are not them.

If we managed to get Hanifin(likely using 7oa) and traded Hutton and MDZ for w/e I like the look of
Hanifin-Tanev
Edler-Stetcher
OJ-Guddy

much better than last year

- Retinalz

And then sign Carlson at 4 x 9

Carlson - tanev
Hannifin - edler
Guddy - stecher
OJ/ beiga

Playoffs!! 😍😳😍

Yeah and the point was after 3 NHL seasons. Nothing to do with age. Provorov and Werenski from the same draft with two years in the NHL are top pairing D.

I could understand all this poopposting over Hanifin if he was a RH shot, but the dude is a lefty. I don't get why paying out the ass is so necessary for a guy who is going to be an awkward fit on special teams and a swashbuckler in need of Tanev level baby sitting at 5v5.

If Boeser is going to be your trigger man on the left, EP as QB on the right, then you need a right shot at the top (and ideally a righty in the bumper), with a left as net front/corner man. That's why Garrison and Edler were so frustrating. If they were playing off a RH QB they don't have to receive a pass, turn their body, wind up and then shoot.

Thats the same reason the Oilers PP is so trash despite an absurd talent level. McDavid as a LH QB had Strome and Letestu as his only one timer options. Klefbom was never a shooting threat because of how long it would take for him to get a pass an shoot, same with Draisatl as the bumper.

Stecher is a 2nd pairing Dman and Guddy is a 3rd pairing.

I'd rather play Biega with Juolevi honestly

- NorthNuck

Absolutely. I'd rather have OJ play with a safety blanket, instead of having to be someone elses safety blanket as he learns.

That's how you take a guy who showed offensive potential like Bogosian, Kulikov or Larsson, and turn them into Who Gives A (frank) second pairing guys useless past center ice.

Brian Campbell as a safety blanket was huge for Ekblad as it allowed Ekblad to just play his game. He got to learn offence AND defence at the NHL without having to poop his pants when the corpse of Willie Mitchell couldn't make a play with enough time and space to build a jungle gym.

Meh, Wilson isn't going to get a break the rest of the series. Its up to him to avoid the Dman.

That's a textbook hook on Eller too.

It only stands out since they were playing NHL HITZ rulez in game 1.

Anyone who honestly believes Gudbranson has played better hockey than Biega the last 2 years needs their head examined.

Totallly. Every GM in the league is out to lunch and you have it figured out. Biega is a waiver wire scrap.

You honestly think Gudbranson, who rates very very near the bottom in every single defensive metric has been a better Defenseman? He's been awful. Biega may not be good enough to merit being on the team for 82 games but i'd take his effort level any day over the horrible hockey Guddy has played in Van.

Trade value is a different argument. GMs take draft position and size into account for that. In terms of who has been better on the ice it's no contest

Yes I honestly believe that. I think biega is arguably the worst defensman in the NHL. He is a train wreck. I like that he works hard but to say he is better the EG is laughable. He hasn’t lived up to expectations but he is still a number 5. Biega has no business playing in the NHL

All I'm saying is if you have any belief in advanced statistics do a little research into the two guys, you might be surprised what you find.

I'm by no means saying Biega belongs permanently in the NHL, i think he is the perfect 7/8 Dman. I do think he would be better for OJs development though

So you think Biega should be our number 6 and EG should be benched? We will have to agree to disagree. Stats are only part of the picture. Why do you think biega would be better than EG for OJs development? He doesn’t do anything well except for chase the puck aggressively. EG at least skated decent and can make a first pass. Also a better leader and fighter

Provorov plays top4. Werenski has been good, but not top2 until Jones stepped in.

In answer to Lindenis, playing over 20 minutes doesn't mean you're on the top pair. Hedman was top4 for many years but it took him a while to be the #1 guy. You guys are making player development of d to be a 2-3 process, not paying much service to how long it really takes.

I did forget that all the best dmen in the league are right handed and we should thus seek out only right handed dmen. Clearly no teams are succeeding without them and no lefty dmen are scoring, you bring up a great point

EG plays a much more physical game, but he is a huge defensive liability and I don't want OJs offensive potential to be stunted by having to cover for an inept partner. Biega can at least scramble to do his part. EG is slow and needs a really good D partner to make him look good.

I was listening to Craig Buttons today he had a very good take on Hanifin. His first comment was Hanifin will top out as a number 4 D not a 3 or higher. He said Bouchard Dobson and Hughes all have a higher ceiling.

He said the reason Carolina want to trade him is because they also know he is a number 4 D.

Be careful what you wish for.
