If OJ is not a guy they need we have prospects like Goldy, Lind I would be willing to part with for NH. I would even entertain a Dahlen for NH trade TBH. People here may not agree but I think NH could be a #1 and if not will be a #2. 32 pts mostly 5v5 last year. Give the kid pp1 time and that could go up a fair bit. His defense also is not terrible. Having a piss poor goalie like Darling makes small mistakes look like huge ones.
- Retinalz

I agree with this. Hanafin paired with Tanev would be exciting for the first time in a long time. Hanafin's ceiling is very high, alot of people had him as 2 or 3 in his draft class. Just because he hasn't played up to that yet doesn't mean he's not going to do a lot more given more PP/time/freedom.

Not following this line of reasoning.

I'll reserve judgement on OJ until he plays a season in the AHL.

- RonPielep

Claimed OJ's stock has dropped a lot. Hanifin is so awesome.

Hanifin was probably a reach as well. As is every player who doesnt live up to standards after a season or two. Its just a bit ridiculous.

sure. and i'd be happy to trade kapanen, bracco and whatever else we have coming up.

but it ain't going to happen.

I agree, those aren't valueable enough pieces. I think Dipietro or Demko they would listen on though, that franchise is so desperate for a goalie.

I could be wrong but I think the more meaningful assessment is that at OJ's age NH had two full years of NHL seasoning (and didn't really look too far out of his element).

I'd imagine OJ is still another year of AHL seasoning away before getting a full season in with the Nucks.

Those direct comparisons, to me, mean more than comparing which players have passed NH from his draft year in what could be seen as a very strong draft for first round D men.

Any chance Canucks take another stab at a UFA goalie if they are able to deal Nielsson? I don't see how any team can perceive him as having value. My prediction is they keep the same tandem and trade one at the TDL, whichever one is getting an actual return, and then bring in Demko to finish the year.

We have Aho and Necas.
- BINGO!

You see Necas as a center? I think he ends up on the wing

I don't think we've seen what NH is or is not yet, like OJ. But you're right, he's much further along the development path. OJ has slightly more value than #7, both would have to be in a package IMO because other teams are going to drive the price up as well.

I'm surprised you think the bold because I would think the opposite, i.e., slightly more value to the #7.

I mean, a prospect that was picked high and is developing versus a unknown quantity at 7. One was picked at 5 two years ago, if he wasn't developing well I might not think so but he seems to be. The only real standout that I can see at 7 is if someone slips like a Boquist, Tkachuk or Wahlstrom. But like I said, it's an unknown quantity and I don't have Dobson or Bouchard rated higher than Juolevi.

Thats probably why you think that Hanifin is capable of 1st pairing. When players in his draft already are.

Hes 3 seasons in and not playing 1st pairing. Likelyhood it happens is slim now. You are probably looking at a #3.

Agreeeeed. If NH is truly on the market, Benning has to make an attempt.

Everyone keeps talking about futures. We have a series of young forwards about to crack the roster. How is their future and development going to fair in the wake of one of the worst D corps in the league?

Someone has to actually clear the zone, makes the passes and clean up the mistakes these young forwards are inevitably going to make.

With the 7th overall pick, the Vancouver Canucks are proud to select an actually established, top four (at the very least), 21 year old NHL D-man.

Anytime the notion of " X might have a higher ceiling" is said, it has to be followed immediately by the fact that any drafted player could just as easily become a flat out bust.

Present value over future value, everytime.

That’s not nice kid, didn’t your mother teach you any manners? You could have asked Leafs hurricanes related questions in the appropriate forum and instead you will likely get a ban because you have a potty mouth. Learn from your mistakes son

Apart from following the simple stats I don't know enough about OJ's development to make an educated assessment.

I do subscribe to the belief that (in the absence of hind-sight bias) for the majority of situations a draft pick loses a little bit of value the moment it is used to select a player (with the rare obvious exceptions where it is known that a player is a sure-fire bargain at their draft position or it is a really strong draft year).

I see a top-10 draft pick as a more versatile commodity that yields interest from a wider market than a particular prospect unless they have made significant developmental gains since they were selected (e.g., Pettersson) but I wouldn't personally put OJ in that category.
