Denial is merely a negotiation posture. I believe Bettman is aware of the groups attempting to purchase the Sens. His saying that the Sens are not for sale is his supporting the position of the current owner. He can say nothing else.

No he is a loud mouth and wants to act like he is one of the most powerful owners in the league. He wouldn't engage in any sale conversations that gives him the perception of being hard done by.
Now with the Alfie comments being said that were off the record, hes the kind of guy that wouldn't sell the time just out of spite. I feel bad for some Sens fans bc you legit know that you won't ever have an organization willing to go to the extremes to try to win. It will be mediocre for another decade with Melly
