I have no clue what Skinner's thoughts are, but I agree about ROR. I don't think we will be moved at the draft unless it is to move up in the top 5. I think the go into the season with him, and depending on how things are going, possible move him late October, early November.
- BatFan88

Yup, better to keep him, give Casey 20 games to get going and reevaluate thereafter. Throwing Casey to the dogs as 2C from day one would be a misstep, even from just a development standpoint.

Mittelstadt, Guhle, Dahlin, Olofsson, Malone and Pilut could all be new to the team next year. We need at least a few players with some notches in their belt to play too.

Interesting some people think Tavares is not worth the money Lol

Ill take MacKinnon Tavares as 1-2 Punch combined for 18m

I agree. He's inconsistent, just as expensive and the same age.

I get that he goes along with Botts/Housley's desire for speed and he fills a position of need, but the cons outweight the pros.

He will be just as expensive, we aren't getting younger and he is inconsistent as you say. Could be great with Eichel, but Canes would have to add for me.

Given that he is their top scorer, I don't see Carolina trading him with extras for our 2nd line center. We'll see, but I don't know how that works to the benefit of the Sabres enough to pull the trigger. Perhaps if he'd take that 5.75 or whatever again, but he'll want a raise, probably to right around that 7M that Kane got...too much.

There are plenty of options with RoR. If we ARE going to trade him, let's get the best return we can, which isn't necessarily the shiniest toy either.

His inconsistency is related to his usage.

Pretty hard to put up a bunch of points when you're saddled with Derek Ryan and Lee Stempniak as your linemates.

Agreed. I think Mittelstadt looked good, but it was less than 10 games. I have high hopes but don't want to put all the eggs in that basket. I don't necessarily need a whole bunch of vets on the team (look how young winnipeg is) but I wouldn't mind some late 20's players to guide younger players.

Honestly it’s unbelievable That some think John Tavares makes no sense you sign elite JT (age 27 ) trade ROR ( age 27 )

Your centers

Jack
JT
Casey

And the wingers you get for ROR to make up the lines

Dobber's isn't loading it for me so can't check, but RoR played with Girgs and Wilson a lot this year as well...both have bad line mates to work with IMO. Those two and a concussed Kyle Okposo didn't help him for sure.

Not saying Skinner is a bad player by any means, just don't think it helps us as much as others I guess. It fills the position of need, but throws Mittelstadt to the dogs as a rookie, doesn't save money and doesn't get us a player more in our "window". I think it would help the Canes immensely, but not us unless there was another significant add. I think any addition would be unlikely from the Canes side. Tough to make it work.

I'd rather spend $11m on elite wingers, especially when we already have Eichel and mitts down the middle for the next 10 years hopefully. Hold on to ROR a while longer (he's gonna keep having his usual seasons), trade him when mitts has proven he's the #2, let Pommer and Moulson's contract die this year and target Eberle or Kucherov next year

So you want to keep Ryan O’Reilly and risk his trade value going down sounds a lot like kane lovers

Is value is at the highest point you trade him now

This.

I don't know if he would want to come here, but JVR is awesome and would probably cost around 7. Sign Vanek to a cheap deal to help out the 3rd line, flex to 2nd when needed.. I'd be a happy camper.

I like Tavares, but 21 Mil between two players is a lot. Especially when we have to pay Dahlin/ (assuming he turns out how we hope)

Or use picks and prospects to acquire wingers for ROR so he doesn't have to play with Wilson, and watch his points go up, and his trade value increases. Or play him with Eichel and his points will increase.

He's 27, not 35. His contract ends at 32. We're fine

A lot of random comments:

- happy for Kane getting 7 X 7 in San Jose
- happier for the Sabres getting that 1st round pick
- Tavares isn't signing here. Why would he sign with the 31st placed NHL team when there are a bunch of much better teams who will back up the Brink's truck for him
- Skinner for ROR makes no sense to me plus Skinner has a full no movement clause - and he isn't going to release it for the Sabres
- I am 100% fine with ROR coming back and 100% fine with Botts trading ROR - if Botts can get us that a very good package (right age, right contract, right ability) in return.
- I am 100% against trading Risto unless a better RHD (right age, right contract etc) in return
- Botts is having a good off season so far - Pilut, Oloffson, Asplund, Ogilve signings.
- Botts needs to shed some of these bad contracts - Bogo, Moulson and Okposo (difficult) come to mind. He also needs to send Beaulieu packing
- Dahlin, Guhle, McCabe, Nelson, Scandella and Risto has the potential of being a very good d-core in a year or two. Add/subtract accordingly.
- Pach is a helluva blogger. Should get the Hart trophy for bloggers.

Back to work now.
