The problem is that the teams in the 4-5 range, Ottawa and Arizona are both in a re-tooling phase. I don't see either one interested in a 30 year old power forward with one year left on his deal. I really think Edmonton for #10 overall is the highest pick you'll get for Simmonds. Now does the 10th and 14th pick get you into that 4-6 range where you can likely land a future star player? Maybe.
- BiggE

Are they both retooling? AZ has been in that stage for years. And if Ottawa was really in that strategy i thought they would have moved Ryan and Karlsson(maybe they do at the draft).

I know it sounds crazy but I would really explore moving Voracek. I think Patrick will be more puck dominate next year and will be closer to what had him pegged as the number 1 pick for years. I would like to get him more of a shooter type to play with. Just my opinion.

agreed, different players but both with 1 year left. Would I like Skinner? Yes, I think he has the scoring ability this teams lacks.

I wouldn't mind revisiting the Hoffman rumor with a different mix of a package.

I think Hoffman may come cheaper in a trade. Ottawa asking for Sanheim and a 1st, I get asking high. With it now being summer and if Ottawa wants to cut salary, moving Hoffman now then paying his contract up to the deadline makes sense. I m biased I like Hoffman better.

Sample size and what Bill talks about in his blog about recency bias is really why I don't get into looking at and rating prospects. Even more so, I don't have close to the amount of time needed to do it justice. Nothing wrong with having an opinion and talking about players and who likes who or doesn't and why, but the reality is that teams have to employ a team of scouts to go and watch these players over and over over a significant period of time to form an accurate analysis of a player. Any fan, unless he doesn't have a job, no family to deal with, couldn't possibly come up with accurate appraisals of draft eligible players on their own. Anyone who claims to, is faking it and taking publicly available info for themselves.

Respectfully, I don't give up sanheim and a 1st for a wing....i just visions of Matt Moulson coming up.

Hoffman has had a couple years of decent performance but at wing...that is a ton to give up.

Gudas, a middling prospect and a second? Sure!!!!

With him clicking with Duschene i think they still hold firm on a high asking price. Assume it includes Sanheim or Myers. After seeing them this past weekend i have no interest including either.

Agree, that was supposedly what Ottawa asked for at the deadline. I think a pick and a prospect who is ready for the NHL gets the deal done. I don't think Ottawa has interest in a vet with term in the trade.

Yep, I understood your overriding point, but the sentence I commented on reminded me of Daigle. Which then reminded me of "nobody remembers who was drafted second" lol
- Scoob

Understood. I always got the feeling Daigle never wanted to be a hockey player.

Goul was drafted in the 3rd round

I agree with the following exception.

If you are in the top 10 , I feel you need to go high ceiling. It's so hard to get legit top line talent outside top 10, and since most teams don't get to draft consistently (most) in the top 10 you have to take advantage of that.

- VladDrag

Yes I know, making it even more egregious than normal in my eyes. Especially with Geuntzel, Duclair, Bjorkstrand and a few others still out there. Granted, its not as egregious as it could have been, and Goul did actually get in to some NHL games. But in my opinion players like him are a dime a dozen and you don't waste a 3rd on him.

I would be shocked at this point if Simmonds is traded. Given their lack of options for a replacement, his injuries and what he means to his teammates.
- Baxter27

I think he is traded for a replacement/roster player, if so.

I just dont see that offer being made. If someone is offering a conparable player about to enter his prime then sure you have to consider it.

I find it kind of depressing. The thought of being granted world class skills at something you don't like to do. Its kind of tragic actually.

I don't believe so.

Simmonds has leadership and toughness qualities that a lot of GMs still prize. And he had three fewer points as Skinner last season in seven fewer games. So their production was nigh on identical.

Since they are both on one year deals, Simmonds being older is not an issue. But Simmonds cap hit being $1,750,000 lower would make him more attractive to contenders without a lot of space. Teams like Nashville or Toronto looking to add an extra piece for a Cup run would pick Simmonds over Skinner 10 times out of 10.

I haven't seen one person make these claims. I'm trying to figure out why you even wrote this, but I enjoy reading other peoples' takes on prospects. Especially due to the fact that I know next to nothing about most of these kids.

Forget Skinner and Hoffman. We need to trade 14 and 19 for Brayden Schenn. We may have to throw in Lehtera to make the cap work.

What kind of job/family life do you think a fan who claimed to know the NHL CBA inside and out would have?

If St. Louis does this trade, does that mean they're forfeiting next season?
