Oh for sure when a guy is UFA status the contracts are just silly. I just wonder when GMs will learn that signing a 27 year old to a 7 year deal is bad business.
- Feds91Stammer

It depends on who he is, I'd sign JT to 7 years without hesitation but Kane would be at the top of my list of guys I wouldn't invest 7 years in

Sharks are most likely headed down the inevitable path of mediocrity like DET did.

The Burns and Vlasic deals are already kind of insane. Add this one plus Couture and Pavelski next season and you have a lot of money tied up to 30+ guys.

- Feds91Stammer

One of Couture or Pavelski will walk next off season, I can't see them keeping both

Yeah well Tavares is definitely in the elite tier so even his eventual age based regression he will likely still be a very good player.

Kane is an awesome player.. but term is too long, though maybe needed to get the deal done. Kovalchuk blows, he would be perfect "Les Canadien"... Give him a 1 yr $10 million contract...what a joke... everyone needs a one dimension Russian player, Habs need two. And btw, JT either NYR or Tor, bank on it... Big Lou cannot build an arena any quicker.. NY is brutal for construction delays... 3 yrs really means 4 1/2 yrs.
- jacksonNYR

I'm pretty sure JT doesn't really care all too much about the arena.
He wants to win and Lou does help their chances immensely. JT going to NYR makes zero sense IMO as they are just starting to rebuild.

Destinations that seem likely IMO are Vegas, San Jose, NYI and apparently there has been speculation that the Preds are in the running too. But at this stage of it,their are a lot of potential suitors. TOR and MTL being included.

Not sure I believe/trust any sources saying DET is a likely destination (although, I'd love to believe that one).

Maybe but what panic signing do they make when Thornton retires? Also didn't realize Hertl needs a new contract this summer.

Doug Wilson knows he wont be around in 3-5 years unless they win a cup. WinWin. Let the next guy deal with $30m cap locked up in 35 year olds.

Yes... I been saying for awhile that if SJ was to sign Tavares they would most likely need to move Hertl for picks...

I think it's a bit high, I would have gone $6M but I they paid a bit more to keep him off the open market.

They should call their old friend Jason Botterill and see what it takes to get ROR

Might be a bit too much of a cap hit for them to take on

He actually cares quite a bit about the arena. Most of the team is unhappy playing at Barclays for a multitude of reasons that have been beat to death and I'm not going to bring up again.

The arena isn't going to be the one thing that makes him go "oooh, ok I'm staying", but it's definitely an important piece of the puzzle.

Good deal. Going to be great if the sharks can keep Kane swimming straight.

What a terrible deal for a super inconsistent and problematic hockey player. 7 mil/year, that's nuts, 5 mil/year would be okayyyyy. Marchessault just signed for 5. Dougie Hamilton under 6. Sean Monahan 6.3 mil/year.

Evander Kane has done nothing to earn premium dollars. 29g, 25a, 54points gets you 7 mil per year???? Only the 2nd time he's broken 50 points! what a bad signing... no way that you can defend that.

Could be, but they probably would have paid something around $12M-$13M for Tavares on the open market so adding Kane/ROR for a $14.5M total cap hit probably shouldn't be such a monumental task. A quick look at CapFriendly has them looking like this currently (doesn't account for Kane's new cap hit)

I think moving a contract to give them a little breathing room wouldn't be too difficult.

But Hertl needs a new deal also, Couture and Pavelski are FA next summer and I think they only have 4 D under contract

Woof! That a lot of cap hit for a guy who has only broken the 30 goal and 50 point thresholds once. That was also 6 seasons ago. He has also been reported as problematic. As for the Lucic comparison...Lucic has been a much more productive player over Kane. I would have kept the 1st rounder and 7 mil against the cap.

Fair points, but it would come down to "what does Wilson value more" and would just be a matter of opinion. Hertl is a good player, but if they're re-signing Kane they have a pretty good winger there and may be better served bolstering things down the middle. Not saying they should/would/will do it, but it wouldn't be insane...if they think they're still Cup contenders.

I'm curious to see what they do with Pavelski/Couture's deals next offseason, mainly Pavelski. He's still producing pretty well, but not like he used to, but he'll be 35 by the time his next deal kicks in. How much money/term could they really dedicate to a 35 year old player?

All their defensemen are under contract (7 of them) except for Dylan DeMelo, who's an RFA

Buyout Martin. Trade Pavelski for futures. Sign Tavares. Keep Hertl. Convince Thornton to sign super cheap.
