It will cost plenty to get Karlsson out of Ottawa - obie
It will, I'm not saying you're wrong...but nobody is backing up a dump truck full of assets without Karlsson agreeing, at least verbally, to an extension before the trade is finalized. Someone will pay a ton for him even just for a year, but not the haul most Sens fans are going to picture as fair value, without an extension.
Any GM that does should be immediately fired or is Pete Chiarelli |

In the Ottawa universe the Douchene trade made sense and was fair value. But so was Brassard for Zibs and a pick... so who knows what can happen there. Management is poop house bat crazy.
Rangers gave a lot of draft picks to play with. They can get it done. |

for one year, the package will be mainly based on quantity, not high-end quality pieces. |

yeah, the rangers have enough pieces to make a good offer.
the sens paid more for duchene then they'll get back for karlsson.

Ottawa will just wait until deadline day to get that return if that's the case |

it'll still be a package of quantity.
non-playoff teams won't be offering up lotto firsts for a pending ufa. |

No doubt about that, but Brassard and a bunch of picks/prospects are hardly comparable to giving up Karlsson. They flat-out can't afford to screw that one up and if they manage to it's going to make them look real, real bad. |

That's what I mean, if it's the best offer they receive, they'll just wait and get that in February |

Your Brendan Smith proposed trade makes some sense in one way you listed, but also has a slight drawback Rangers wise, depending upon how much spending they will do this summer. They also have to absorb $3.611M next season alone for one, for last summer's buyout of now Lightning d'man, Dan Girardi.
The fine part is the Rangers shedding Smith's salary, less the $1.1M you proposed, in exchange for a Panthers Prospect(s) &/or a pick(s) like a 3rd Rounder. But the part they will never do is tie up $3.4M for a backup to Hank, in Reimer, to make it $11.9M in cap space for their 2 goalies only. They have one now who played very well while both Hank and Pavlec were out injured simultaneously, in Georgiev, who definitely will be given his chance in training camp & the preseason NOT TO LOSE HIS JOB, as it stands today.
On the Panthers end, they would be "taking a chance" with Smith, who could either be the Smith who played very well, especially physically, in the postseason last year to earn his new contract, or the one who ended up not so good both in Detroit 2 years ago, prior to coming to the Rangers at the deadline, and the bad version who reported out of shape to training camp last season, and played poorly.

What will make them look bad is if he walks for nothing.
I guess he goes at the deadline for whatever the best offer is. |

So Buffalo gets their first in 2020 . Might be a destination for Tavares now . Kane would look good on his wing. |

Might make it hard for SJ to fit JT in now... They'll have to deal Hertl for picks as a RFA and probably need to shed more salary and obviously let Joe walk |
