I have thought for a long time the Ranger plan has been to deal for Karlsson and try to sign Tavares as a UFA.

But I don't think the Rangers have the quality assets to compete with the Islanders in making a trade offer for Karlsson.

I think Lamerillo sorts this out really quickly. He signs Tavares, adds a quality goaltender and makes a monster offer for Karlsson. Or, he decides he cannot get Tavares signed and does the best deal he can to send Tavares where he desires to play. I believe Tavares really does want to stay.
