Why the fack do we want mason?
We are past the stage of taking on sh!tty contracts....wont have room for that.
No wasted cap space. - Fakepartofme
Don't want Mason, just saying that if the Jets want to trade him, they will need to add to the deal |

I was under the impression that the Leafs were strapped with the sheer number of contracts in general. Or has that been resolved?
Idk - I forget when this was a topic of discussion. - RickJames77
Earlier in the year but they traded Soshnikov for a 4th. Now they have a ton of UFA most or all of whom will walk. |

and if they end up 10 million shy of the cap it would be shortsighted to not at least consider taking on a 1 year deal like that. - Blazed
How will they end up 10 million shy of the cap?
22m available.
6-7 on Nylander
have to re up Carrick or trade.
then find replacements for 5-6 players.
Improve the D.

And we need to replace 6 players, sign Nylander and re up or trade carrick.
Not a lot of room.
Nylander will take up 6 -7 of that 22.
Barely any. - Fakepartofme
There is tons of room. Who are they going to replace those players with? Unless the re-sign Bozak, JVR and Komarov they will have ample space. I will bet dollars to donuts Kapanen and Johnsson are on the team next season.
The UFA pool is very weak. |

I swear people have the most unrealistic expectations of goalies compared to any other position.
So many goals are on the team with it being a team game, not necessarily the tender. Of course there are exceptions, but I feel the blame for poop play that winds up with the puck in the back of the net falls more on the goalie than the team in front of them when it really was the team that gave up too good of a chance for the goalie to be expected to save. - RickJames77
I'm sorry but those first 2 goals in the 3rd period were on Andersen.
My sunday morning pickup league goalie could have stopped those 2. |

Ive been disappointed with the leafs D for decades...whats another season.
Personally I would like to see Gardiner + (if need be) traded for another top 4 D who actually knows how to play D.
We can afford to lose out on some of his points, I want someone who knows how to play D. |

it'll be 25-27 by the time the cap goes up.
they'll be room to take on a $4Mish dump. buried with the marlies, it's a $3M caphit.
this is the last year we can do that. so it has to be a 1-year deal.

Honestly, I don't see how Carrick comes back. Maybe they trade him, or not qualify him.. An RFA, that hasn't been able to crack the top 6.. Only good thing about him, is that he is a RHD. |

I'm not arguing any specific goals here - I'm a bit of a goalie apologist. I totally admit it.
Of course there are plenty of shots that should be stopped, but at times, especially here with Rask, people see that he let in 3-4 goals and assume he just stunk up the joint. He gets a lot of poop for being let out to dry more often than he lets in a bad goal.
It is the only individualistic position in hockey and I think people weight it to heavily in that direction and neglect to acknowledge some of the goals/chances are as a result of a team breakdown and not necessarily bad goaltending. |

Who is going to trade a defensemen better than a 50pt plus dman who is a UFA in one year? I like Gardiner and if he had more term he'd carry value but pending UFA severely hampers the return. |

I agree with you, giving up a goal should not always fall on the goalie's shoulders; a breakaway goal is usually due to a defensive breakdown/missed assignment somewhere on the ice. Similar with a 2 on 1 break. |

We really wont have that much cap space. - Fakepartofme
But we do. About $22.1 million to fill 7-8 roster spots - Add back the $5.3 - when Horton goes on the IR, thats 27.4 million.
Nylander will increase to about $6.5 imo, so there is still over $20 million for 7 spots.
Remove $4 for Gardiner, can easily at JT and a quality d-man. At the very least 3 of those spots will be entry level deals.
Cap friendly is also not accounting for the cap going up to $80 million (based on $74.9 million cap - wow another $5 million - another quality d-man)

I think that's overblown as well. His mistakes are highly visible and particularly egregious but he plays a ton of minutes and is usually quite effective. |
