I think Washington gives Samsonov a chance in the crease to see how he does. If he looks like he's capable of taking the starting position than they may consider moving on from Holtby. But if not they might as well keep Holtby around for awhile. When does his contract end?

Trade Orpik and keep Carlson, 4 dman play more than Orpik. They don't have to move Holtby to keep Carlson.

I know, but sometimes you have to take a risk and if they don't win this year their window has gotta be closing pretty quickly.

I don't know that they make it this far again without Carlson. I'm also making an assumption they can't afford to bring him back so if I'm wrong on that do let me know.
