The leafs could technically sign Tavares long term this year and see how it plays out. They have a year of no cap trouble this year. Swing for the fences and then IF need be trade a nylander next year. Hopefully he has a good year and they can score a lot for him.

I don’t see a downside to signing Tavares.

Scratch a big name from the UFA field this summer. As @sportsnetirf first reported and @PierreVLeBrun alludes to here, when signed it’s expected to be a seven-year deal with AAV of $7M, and BUF will get first-round pick.

Its a bad deal for SJ in my opinion. Good player check, tough to play against check, head case check - highest point production ever 57 points (6 years ago) Also for a bonus - has never played a full season - came close this year with 78 games. SJ is desparate though.

Having said that I suspect it ended up just the way they planned, wasn't it always Dubas gaining a little experience from the Loufather so he could take over?

Uncle Lou connection for one... and Islanders would seem to need to make a case for JT to stay... i.e. add... certainly goaltending... I'm guessing JvR would look good on Tavares wing.... seems like a upgrade over Bailey to me.
